Q: I lost all my photos when i updated my latoptop and iphoto changed to normal photos (like on an iphone). how do i get my photos back?

When i updated my laptop to the latest update, the iphoto changed to photos (like we have on iphones and ipads). When i opened it all my photos were not on it. Where can i get all my photos and videos that were on iphoto? (I cannot open iphoto anymore).

Try to get iPhoto working again, so you can access the iPhoto Library from iPhoto to be able to repair it in iPhoto.

Photos is a new application. It has been added, but not replaced iPhoto.

iPhoto may have been removed from the Dock at the bottom of your screen, but should still be there in your Applications folder. Drag iPhoto from the Applications folder and double click it to open it.

You may see a warning, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated; then click the "Open iPhoto" button.

When iPhoto opens, are all your photos there?

If the iPhoto icon should appear to be crossed to, your iPhoto version is incompatible with Yosemite 10.10.3. Update iPhoto to version 9.6.1.  You may need to be able to run iPhoto to fix your iPhoto Library before you migrate it to Photos.

if you missed the update: You can no longer buy iPhoto from the App Store anywhere, and also not update it from the "Updates" tab of the App Store. You can however reinstall it, if it is showing among your Purchases at the App Store and associated with your AppleID.

Sign into the App Store and look at the Purchases tab.

Reinstall as described in this User Tip:

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.

If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:   Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

Post back, when you have checked if iPhoto is displaying the photos in your iPhoto Library correctly, or if the photos are also missing in iPhoto.  Where do you store your iPhoto Library? Is it in your Applications folder or on an external drive?

And which version of iPhoto created your iPhoto Library?  If iPhoto was older than version 7.1.2, you need to run iPhoto Library Upgrader, before you can migrate the library to Photos.     iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
