Q: Is Apple aware that Photos is duplicating hundreds of iPhoto pix?

I recently "upgraded" to Yosemite (the BIGGEST Mac mistake I've made in over 20 years of being a Mac user) and it told me that iPhoto will not work and that I have to use the new "Photos" app instead.

So I open Photos and it migrates all of my iPhotos into it and it has duplicated thousands of images! Two days ago I had about 8,000 images in iPhoto. Now I have over 14,000 images in Photos. One specific image which was dated October 20, 2000 has been duplicated over 200 times!

How do I remove all these duplicates WITHOUT spending any money?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 500GB HD

Wait, huh? How did iTunes get brought into this? Everyone else is saying to use the App Store to resolve this.

Furthermore, under "iTunes in the Cloud" there are two items: Manage Devices and iTunes Match, neither of which have anything related to hidden or unhidden purchases.

Under purchses in the App Store you can unhide the hidden purchases which is where your iPhoto download will be.

Unless something has changed since April, you cannot "un-hide" purchases from any place except iTunes:

Use iTunes on a Mac or PC to hide or unhide purchased music, movies, TV shows, and apps. To hide books, use iBooks on a Mac and iTunes for Windows on a PC.

You can't hide purchases using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, unless you're a member of a Family Sharing group. Family Sharing group members can hide App Store purchases in the App Store.

    Am I missing something here?

OK - I get it. You are talking about going to the Apps Store account and un-hiding there.

So, whether it is via iTunes or the App Store, you have to click on your Apple ID/Name and go to your Account Info screen to un-hide the purchases. You are landing in the same place - just a different path to get there.

    Apologies to all! MY BAD!

So, if under View My Account in the Apps Store you are not seeing an option for Hidden Items with a Manage option next to that option, then you do not have any hidden apps.

    Sorry for any confusion

And did yu delete it from you applications folder as instructed multiple times?

Delete iPhoto from your Applications folder. Make sure there are no disks mounted that have a copy of iPhoto on them. Empty the Trash.

You still have not answered that - since we can not see you we can only work with what you actually tell us

I did not delete it because I was not able to complete all of the steps that lead up to that point. The farthest I got was logging into "My Account" at the App Store and learning first-hand that it is impossible to "unhide" my purchases. I do not want to delete iPhoto when I have no way of downloading it.

It is not "impossible" to un-hide your purchases. Again, if you don't see an option to do so, then you do not have any that are hidden. That only shows up when you actually have hidden purchases.

Your choice - unless you do there is not way but you do what ever you want

    and the instructions clearly say

Just as a precaution, copy iPhoto from your Applications folder onto an external disk or USB stick and eject that drive.

    Then

Delete iPhoto from your Applications folder. Make sure there are no disks mounted that have a copy of iPhoto on them. Empty the Trash.

And since it does not currently work I'm not clear on why you have continued to refuse to do the one thing that has fixed this for hundreds of people.

again it is your choice - either follow the suggestipons or do not - but if you continue to refuse to follow the suggests then photo will continue to not work

The first reply tells you exactly how to try to resolve this - You now have 22 responses and you have not followed the first instructions and of course you have not resoved anything

    I'm done - have a nice day

Sir, I appreciate your help, but those instructions in the first reply EXPLICITLY say...

"First, go to the App Store, Purchases tab, and make sure iPhoto is in the list of purchased software........ If it is not in your Purchases list, this will not work, so don't bother continuing."

iPhoto is NOT in my purchased list anywhere - NOWHERE - and that is exactly the reason why I have not proceeded with those instructions!

If that's the best you have to offer, then it's fine for you to be "done". I've been working the best I can to get this resolved so the smarmy comment was really uncalled for.

If you looked at Dorian's screenshot, and the fact he came from Lion, he probably never purchased iPhoto 9. I did not myself. I also had nothing to unhide. My ONLY solution was to call apple (or set them up to call me, actually), then they gave me a code to redeem for iPhoto 9 in the app store.

If you did not have iPhoto 9 downloaded from the App store, then there is nothing to unhide, period---even if you had iPhoto 9, but not from app store (say if someone threw it on a flash drive for you).

If I had read this thread Sunday, I might agree with people bashing OP, but I found that thread about getting iPhoto9, only to realize that I had never downloaded ANY iPhoto from the App store. No updates, either (Lion used system updates, under the apple, not the app store). Anyone just updating (downgrading, really) to Yosemite from an earlier version could be in the same boat. I looked at iPhoto 9 when it first came out, and the forum was full of people having their libraries hosed, so I didn't bother until this weekend (my drive threw smart errors, and I popped the hood and replaced my HD with an SSD with a clean Yosemite on it).

No, I just want to do it a way that will work and if someone had posted a link with valid instruction, then I would have followed them.

At least one person on this thread -- -- understands what I'm dealing with.
