Q: Etre report lists failed launch items

In researching how to deal with the relentless Safari popup rover.ebay.com, which I never resolved, I ended up downloading and running Etre.  Now, I'm concerned with the multitude of [failed] items it list in its report, particularly the System Launch items.  I don't know what to do about them.  I feel as though I should delete them, but that may be overkill, and I don't know how to do that.  Would I just search for them and manually delete them?

{As far as the rover.ebay.com problem, I ran the Keychain first aid.  Also, there is no rover certificate listed anywhere in keychain.  I do get ebay emails.  I tried searching in Entourage for anything rover-related

and found nothing.)

I use ClamXav nightly.  Over time, I've removed or disabled enough Symantec stuff to keep the beach ball deflated.  No more lock ups.

Thanks to all who respond!

You are running Nortons (Symantec) possibly the worse program you can run on a Mac. Uninstall it per the developers directions. You neither need it nor want it.

    Cheers

Yeah, I know it causes some conflicts.  As I said, I disabled most of it and removed some Symantec extension that was crashing Firefox.  I use the "Identity" part of the "Internet Security" and all the "Advanced" parts of "Firewall" 'cause I think it protects me online.  Is there something else you'd reccommend?

No, I would not recommend any anti virus or security software for a Mac. It is not required and will only slow down your Mac.

Norton doesn't do a good job of protecting you.

As long as Norton is installed, further troubleshooting efforts are wasted. (Yes, it's really that bad!) Removing it entirely is the first thing you need to do. Most likely, that will fix the problem, but if not, it still is something that must be done before we can proceed with further advice. Be sure to remove it only using the uninstaller provided by Symantec. The Norton installer will offer to uninstall Norton if it detects that it is installed. Unfortunately, since you have removed part of Norton, it's entirely possible that you may need to reinstall it before it will allow you to remove it.

Background applications can fail for a number of reasons.

Look at your final RAM usage - there is 14GB of swap used - that is RAM that has been saved to disk because there wasn't enough room for it in the physical memory. You have 16GB of RAM - which is plenty for normal use, so something is requiring a lot more RAM than you have installed. Swap (stored on disk) is many times slower than RAM. I'd suggest that some processes are failing due to memory pressure - the OS can kill apps or services that are not in use when RAM is required elsewhere. Etrecheck normally states when memory pressure kills jobs, however this version may be different.

Personally I would start by rebooting. Disable all of Symantec's software if you want to see if that is the cause of some of your issues - it clearly isn't protecting you from whatever 'rover.ebay.com' is doing (I don't know what that is or what it does to you, some websites simply have terrible adverts, try another browser with no history to see if it is cookies that are provoking the popups).

Uninstalling Norton may be easier. If you do not want to remove Norton then you can boot into safe mode (hold shift at startup). That will disable all third party startup items & many Apple extensions too. Diagnosing your issues will still be complex because you have to take into account what is disabled by safe mode.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode - Apple Support

Repair the permissions if you think it will help with the permission denied messages. It is in Disk Utility's first aid tab.

Your log output could be caused by Norton - third party software with a lot of system access can ruin the entire OS. Please stop ignoring the advice given here -

I have never run Norton & never experienced the issues you are seeing.

What exactly do you think Norton is protecting you from? OS X has a built in firewall. OS X has a built in anti malware blocker (Xprotect). OS  X has no 'identity protection' built in but are you really sure you need it?

Wow.  Thanks everyone for your input.  OK OK OK!  I'll trash all that Norton stuff (free from Comcast).

I assumed my occasional slowness was due to how many windows and tabs I keep open.  Safari seems to really eat up the resources.  I usually keep Safari and Firefox open together, using each for different kind of stuff -- both with lots of tabs.  If things run too slowly, I'll close some windows, or even quit Safari.

My rover.ebay.com issue seems to be mild compared to what others report.  As I posted yesterday, I'm now more concerned with the [failed] stuff from Etre.  I'll now uninstall Norton, restart, and run Etre again.  Be back soon!

Sorry for the delay -- got called away.  Then, after uninstalling all Symantec Stuff and restarting, I lost my custom system and doc prefs.  So, I opened in TechTool Pro 7 and rebuilt the permissions, volume structures, and file structures.  While I was there, I had the RAM checked.  After rebooting, I ran Etre with these results:

I'd like to note that every morning I have SuperDuper! 2.7.5 rebuild the permissions before copying my main drive to another drive.

I'd also like to note that I was thrilled, Drew, to see the old dogcow as your icon!  Brought me back to the days of my Mac Plus, System 6, and first Mac Bible.  My, we've come a long way!  While I'm reminiscing, I still use my IIe and 5.25" floppies to run my laser disc presentations in the classroom!

Lastly, if it's not inappropriate to ask here, I have a few unrelated questions:

    1. Does it still help to occasionally zap the pram?  (I did on my last reboot).

    2. I get a WHOLE bunch of found but not expected ACLs when rebuilding permissions.  Don't know what that is (though I think it has to do with preserving my finder icon layouts, which is important to me).  Should I do anything about that?

Other than that, I seem to have been nicely upgraded by this forum.  Thanks again to all those spending time just to help me!

You'll want to give it a few hours of normal usage, the first report was after 6 days of running, so that could account for the large swap usage if something was steadily using up all your RAM. Check on it to see if it spirals out of control again.

    Repairing permissions

This reads the lists of installed packages & sets the file permissions according to the rules set in the package receipts. It is pointless doing that every day as part of SuperDuper! I do it when I get around to it (maybe every few months or if the OS is reporting permissions errors). You could create a specific monthly schedule to repair the permissions in SuperDuper! but that still seems a little excessive to me.

See this list for errors to ignore during the process…

Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore - Apple Support

It's probably more important to run the verify option in Disk Utilities first aid tab. Run that every few months or weeks if you want to be sure the file system is not failing or damaged. Tech Tool Pro will do more checks but I'm wary of relying on third party disk tools, personally I'd rather spend the time making good backups of everything (all hardware fails eventually).

PRAM saves a few system settings, Apple have info on that at…

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Basically if the sound, display & startup disk settings are going haywire zap the PRAM, otherwise it can be left alone.

Your postfix still looks like it is crashing or failing to run. I wonder if you are getting the same errors in the logs that were complaining about the permissions on the lock file.

Inside an admin account you can run this in Terminal (inside /Applications/Utilities) to list the permissions on that file…

    sudo ls -l /var/lib/postfix/master.lock

It will prompt for the admin password with no feedback as you type the password..

Mine looks like this on 10.9.

    [~]$ sudo ls -l /var/lib/postfix/master.lock

    -rw-------  1 _postfix  wheel  33 12 Feb 03:25 /var/lib/postfix/master.lock

I suspect 10.8 will have similar privileges, I may be able to double check tomorrow unless someone else has the info to hand. Wait for help if you are unsure about editing the permissions on it

You might ask yourself why Firefox is chewing up 156% CPU, or was that just an anomaly?

    Good point Bob.

Check for any updates to any Firefox extensions (if you use them). Disable them to see if it is any better then try enabling them one by one if you want to track down which ones are problematic, they may conflict with each other or with a particular site, so you may need to do some sleuthing.

Thanks Drew and Bob.  I interpreted Drew's advice to monitor things for a while to mean I should wait a few days to re-post, but I did run and save piece of Etre since then.  (I just figured the Firefox % was from leaving 3 windows with a total of 68 tabs open all the time.  The only extension I have is Ant Video Downloader.)  I always have the latest versions and updates for everything.

Also, I'm wondering if Activity Monitor data would be helpful at all?

You are still running out of RAM, that means the OS will store the RAM as swap, slowing the OS. You may not notice, but it can occasionally be a reason for the spinning beach ball that should be reduced by the fact you have an SSD.

If you still have many tabs open close them & see if it helps. It looks like Firefox & Safari (WebProcess) are 2 large users of the memory along with Flash. You may consider setting Flash to load on click if you plan on having many windows open. I think it is in 'Tools > Add ons', Plugins. Set Flash to 'ask to activate'. Safari has a 'Click to Flash' extension if you want to do a similar thing in that browser. I have avoided Flash for sometime since it used to use a lot of resources - it may be better nowadays.

mds is Spotlight, I wonder if it is indexing new content.

    I don't know what com.apple.coremedia.videodecoder is doing?

If you use 'AppCleaner Helper.app' move it to the SSD, there isn't much point having it on the HD if that disk is likely to spin down. It is set as a login item, delete the old item in System Preferences & set up that app again when it is installed on the boot disk.

You are still getting launchd failures, but there are no new logs.

Logitech Control Center has a newer version, 3.9.2 (it may be fixes for newer OS's).

p.s. Use cmd+shift+4 then hit spacebar. It will screenshot a whole window when you click in it with the camera icon. It can help to see the whole picture
