Q: Transferring backup from vs 7 iPad to  new iPad vs 8

I have an iPad 3 that I am still running Vs 7.  I have not updated because I have only 2 G left on device.  I have backed up the device onto iTunes on my PC.  And of course the device is backed up daily on iCloud.  I am planning to purchase an iPad Air 2.  Do I need to update my old iPad to vs 8 first and back up onto iTunes again and of course the Cloud to transfer all my data to the new iPad?

I have an app that is a .pdf editor where I can save and edit documents and another app where I can save .pdf knitting patterns with in the app.  Will all the data in these apps be backed up in the back up to iTunes and iCloud?  Or do I need to scramble and find a way to transfer all that data to my PC in some way?

WIll Apple do the data transfer if I purchase the iPad at the Apple store?

You don't need to update your old iPad.

The following has information on how to do the transfer: Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device - Apple Support

Application data is included in both iCloud backups and iTunes backups. If I was doing it, I would backup to both iCloud and iTunes or hang on to the old iPad until I was certain everything went as planned.

I agree with everything that FoxFifth said, but I would go one step further with the documents that you want to save. I would transfer those odd files to my Mac or in your case to your PC. You need to connect the device to iTunes on your PC in order to do this and your off apps have to support file sharing. My guess - without knowing which apps that you are using - is that they do support file sharing.

    Read this for more information.

Ignore the statement about using iCloud Drive to keep your documents in sync. That is not the purpose of this backup step that I am recommending. I am recommending this procedure so that you can store your important documents on your PC not in Apple's cloud.

I Hate autocorrect with a passion. I'm just too lazy to turn it off for that one time in ten that it suits my needs.

Where I mistakenly typed "I would transfer those odd files.... I meant pdf files. Autocorrect does that to me every time and no matter how many times I reset the keyboard dictionary, it keeps coming back.

In this case "odd" sort of worked OK -- I don't have many, if any, pdf files on my iPad so I didn't consider the use of odd to be odd.

Auto correct wants to add a capitol A at the beginning of a sentence that starts with the letter T.  Why, I have no idea.  There seems to be no reason.  It does, however, make me evaluate my grammar and perhaps use better word choices.

Back to the question, I read to the directions, which referred to being updated to version 8.  Are these instructions the same for 7?

I will have to check with the app developer support to see if there is file sharing (which isn't this a vs 8 feature?

I have been using file sharing since iOS 6, IIRC. I know that it was around befor iOS 7.

It is easy to see if the app works with file sharing, connect the iPad to your computer with the cable and lunch iTunes. Select the iPad under the devices icon. Then click on the apps tab. Scroll to the bottom of the apps window in iTunes and look for File Sharing. Scroll through all of the apps in that window. If your PDF apps appear in that window, then they support file sharing.

Will this also work with an app that contains a .pdf file storage with in it?  I have a knitting app that I use that enables me to import .pdf knitting patterns that I have purchased.  I am hoping that the data will be transferable as I have not only patterns I have purchased but patterns I have designed on other apps and transferred to the main knitting app.  I did get a reply from the app support, their suggestion was to Google "iOS backup app data" for help.  Wow, great help.

    GGreat help indeed!

I use Adobe Acrobat and a couple of other PDF apps. If I download a PDF from the web or an email on my iPad and move it (Open in) to Adobe Acrobat, I can transfer that PDF to my Mac using file sharing. If I create PDF files on my Mac and then drag them into the Adobe Acrobat file sharing window while the iPad is connected and as described in the support article, those files will be transferred to Adobe Acrobat on my iPad when I sync the iPad. I can transfer files from the iPad to the Mac and from the Mac to th iPad. It does not matter where the PDF files originated or whether I created them myself from Word or Pages on my Mac or whatever app that I used to create them.

if all of your patterns are PDF files and the app supports file sharing, they should all be transferable back and forth from iPad to computer and from computer to iPad.
