Q: Time Capsule stopped working now get unexpected error

Please someone help me before the thing gets throw out the window.

I have my time capsule connected via a ethernet cable to my SKY broadband router, for the last year it has been backing up my system, 20 days ago it stopped backing up, I have looked at a few post on here but can't find a solution to my problem.

I have now factory reset the TC, I open airport and my TC (i think) appears under "other wifi devices", when I connect to it, it says "examining the base station" then after a 30 seconds it says "an unexpected error occurred. Try Again".

Well I have tried and tried again.

anyone........

It is not the Time Capsule that should be thrown out the window......it is the Yosemite operating system on your Mac.

There are still a number of networking bugs in Yosemite, and you have one of them crawling around in your Mac.

Try the following workaround on your Mac......

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

    Open Network

Click on WiFi on the left panel to highlight it

Click Advanced at the lower right of the window

    Click the TCP/IP tab

Make sure that the setting for Configure IPv6 is set to Link Local Only

    Click OK

Click Apply in the next window

Now click Ethernet to highlight it

    Click Advanced

    Click TCP/IP

Make sure that the setting for Configure IPv6 is set to Link Local Only

    Click OK

Click Apply in the next window

    Restart your Mac

Power off and restart the TC

See if that helps on the "unexpected error" bug

That one will usually cure the "unknown error" issue. See this Apple Support document to confirm:

AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3 - Apple Support

Do you happen to have an iPhone or iPad handy that you could try to use to set up the TC?

The iPad and iPhone versions of AirPort Utility and AirPort Setup have always worked more reliably than AirPort Utility on a Mac.

If you have not already done so, download and install AirPort Utility on the iPad (since it has a larger, easier to see screen)

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/airport-utility/id427276530?mt=8

    Once the App is installed.......

Go to the Home Screen on the iPad

    Tap on Settings (gear icon)

    Tap on WiFi

Look for a listing of Set Up a New Base Station

Tap on Time Capsule. The example below shows an AirPort Express, but you will see Time Caspsule

That will get the setup "wizard" running to guide you through

Thanks very much for that, it now shows the TC on the phone Airport Utility, and I now have a green light on the TC itself, but it still does not show on the laptop, I have done a reboot but nothing there at all.

Unfortunately, as you have confirmed,  this is a Yosemite issue, not a Time Capsule issue.

Your best bet may be to post in the Yosemite support area or contact Apple Support for assistance. The link for the Yosemite support area is just below:

    OS X Yosemite

Click "Contact Us" at the lower right of this web page to reach Apple directly.
