Q: How on earth do I send photos via the new "Photos" application???

I'm using a new iMac. Very fast cable connection (Comcast). The newest software on all Apple products I own (10.10.3 and iOS 8.3). I do not need to update any software.

Now, with that said, I am so incredibly frustrated. How do I email photos using the "Photos" app like we always have with "iPhoto"??

To clarify, I am selecting three simple photos to email to a friend. I have all 3 selected, and then I click on that box (I don't know the official name of the box, but it's the square thing with an arrow pointing up out of it). When I click on that box, *THAT* is where I should see an option to email. But I don't. This is what I see instead:

iCloud Photo Sharing

Messages

AirDrop

Facebook

Flickr

More

None of those options are what I want----I want to EMAIL someone. So I click on "More". Clicking on "More" launches a System Preferences menu for "Extensions". Huh???? Wow am I confused. Anyway, so I sit here staring at the "Extensions" box, and I do see my email program in there (Outlook---I do NOT use Mail). Outlook is "greyed out" and is not clickable. But I do see that Outlook does indeed have a check mark next to it already.

Folks, at this point I am so lost and frustrated I'm ready to scream. I've been a heavy Apple user since 1985. That's THIRTY YEARS! I've never used a PC---ever. I have been Mac all the way, through all of their ups and downs. And it's so frustrating to me that a user like me can not figure out something that SHOULD be incredibly easy.

I would sure appreciate some help so that I can just email photos from "Photos" just like we've always done with iPhoto.

(PS: Yes, I know that I can drag photos out of Photos and plop them down onto the Desktop. Then I can create a new email, and click "attach", and bring those emails into the email. However: 1) That's too clumsy and way too many steps, and 2) It does not allow us to choose from small/medium/large/actual size. I also discovered that I can't even click and drag a photo out of Photos and into an email. It just bounces back. Super, super frustrating!!!!). Thanks for any assistance.

I also use Airmail 2 but the composer works here, the share doesn't.

Thanks Terence, originally, not working at all but since repairing permissions and changing iPhoto preferences to email share from iPhoto (instead of Apple Mail) it now does what you suggest.  It does not offer to resize the image though like Mail used to.  I will need to get someone to check the size of the received image, unless you know?  I can't find any settings in preferences to set the size of jpeg's sent by email as attachments but I tried sending one to my wife and it sent quite quickly.  Either way this is a lot better than nothing and I don't often send images by email, just a few older relatives using pc's, no photo sharing, no Face Book etc.

    Thanks again,

    Rod

I too have just spent over an hour trying to attach a photo to an email. Exported to my desktop in the end and sent from there. Final straw fro me so after purchasing 4 iPads, 1 iPhone and my 2011 Mac Pro it is time to go back to a Windows based laptop. My last year has been **** using a Mac product. My iPad 1 is only used as a radio alarm clock (cannot even open a newspaper without it cashing) I am on my third iPad mini cover. Mac pro takes 20 minutes to open safari on a good day. I purchased an iPod on line with engraving for my wife's birthday, when received it would not work. Took back to the Apple store in Bristol who told me I should have made an appointment to return the goods and they were too busy to check it out. After over an hour of discussion , they did confirm it faulty and replaced it FOC. This forum appears to be the only avenue for Mac support, I have had enough!

Dear ToonGeorge you sure sound like you've been having a hard time, I can hear the frustration from here but if you are suggesting you would have had less trouble with a PC I'm afraid I would have to disagree.  For starters you don't need to export an image in iPhoto or Photos to the desktop you can just drag an drop it there.  Secondly like me I assume you still have iPhoto sharing an image via iPhoto is a doddle and it still gives you the resizing options.  My issue was with Airmail but as stated that is now fixed.

You do realise your 2011 MBP is now four and a half years old, have you tried repairing Permissions, running Verify Disc in Disk Utility or checking for Adware with say Adware Medic, do you use Ad Blocker or Ghostery on your browser.  How much spare storage do you have on your hard drive?  It needs 10 to 20% of free storage to work properly.

The iPad 1 is even older than your MBP so since it will not support iOS 8 it is a bit outdated but the same rules and issues as for the MBP apply.

As for the iPad purchased on line perhaps you were unlucky but you can hardly blame the product for covers wearing out.

The bottom line is the life expectancy of these hardware devices is about 5 years and a certain amount of maintenance is required to get there and even more beyond that.

My advice is to tackle the issues one at a time either on this forum or another (this is not the only one) eg http://www.mac-forums.com/ and fix your issues as they occur if you think you would do better with a PC you are welcome to try but given the amount of iHardware you own you are bound to strike some problems at least with apple products you can fix them yourself.

Yep, I too have been a Macintosh user since 1985. And this is very frustrating. I am tempted to use my iPhone to email photos. I use Microsoft Entourage. But the new "Photos" application does not even have a way to share using Apple Mail.

    Humpf!

Incorrect - it most certainly does and millions of people use Photos with mail daily  --  as to Microsoft mail products contact MS as they have to supply the proper interfaces for their products to be used with Photos

oneemd is saying he can share a photo on his iPhone because the iPhone uses Mail by default.  And I don't think there is any argument about Mail being able to send (share) pics from Photos but third party default email clients are an issue on OSX as I have stated. The only way for me (an Air Mail 2 user) to share via email AND get the resizing options is to change my default email client back to Mail each time. MY arguement was that in the past with iPhoto having my default email client set as Air Mail didn't stop iPhoto from mailing photos via Mail.  With Photos is does.  So I can use iPhoto to share pics but not Air Mail unless I want to end full size images of about 3.9 MB.  They (Air Mail) inform me they are waiting on Apple to see if they release an API for this.

Gee - you read words differently than I do  --  this statement seem very clear to me and it is totally incorrect

Larry I think I see where you are coming from.  The answer to the first question is "You Can't." i.e. You can't email photos direct from Photos (unlike iPhoto) You can however share via Mail.

I am far from a Mac expert but what I have been doing to email photos from Photos running Yosemite is: Click on photo(s) > Click on the Email Box Icon (at the top right of the frame directly to the left of the Search box) > Many options including Mail can be selected > Mail will open with the photo(s) you've selected. In Mail, you can also select the size of the photo(s) you would like to send. Hope this helps.

I have never posted on a forum in my LIFE. Like most of the people here, I have also been a Mac user for, well, too many years for me to be OK with this situation. And yet I am so frustrated - and impressed with the responses here - that I am breaking my silence. ARE YOU SERIOUSLY TELLING ME THAT I CANNOT SEND A PHOTO DIRECTLY FROM THE PHOTO PROGRAM USING OUTLOOK? Really? I'm not using some antiquated email client. I'm not trying to send a 4 hour, home-made, color corrected video. I want to select one photo of my daughter, and send it to my mother. Via Outlook.

LYKUNO- I want to thank you for the time you spent finding a solution. The export path is a good - albeit totally insane - work around.

Apple - You must be kidding me.

    Hannah

PS - With iPhoto, there was a great option to save all your photos in iPhoto to Dropbox. I assume this has gone away, in favor of iCloud Storage. Great. So what am I supposed to do with the hundreds of photos I've already backed up and organized in Dropbox?

and the simple answer (from the very first post had you bothered to read before RANTING is

The problem is that Outlook needs an update to work with the new extension system for Photos.app.

RANT at Microsoft as it is their problem - not the volunteers here

When Apple releases a new program, the onus is on them to ensure compatibility with popular partner applications (e.g. Facebook). Microsoft hopefully will help their customers by releasing an update, but they are certainly not the cause of the problem.

Larry - are you an Apple employee (or volunteer)? Your response to me seemed unnecessarily condescending and, frankly, rude. Regardless of whether I had read previous posts (I had, as I reference them), I had a question and a frustration that I wanted to express - help or understanding are all that's needed here.

These are third-party app issues. Microsoft and Dropbox need to update their apps to work with the new Photos app.
