If you had iOS8/5G iPod and an iPhone with iOS8 you could set up Continuity to do what you want but the iPod has to be near the iPhone.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity

Jan 17, 2016 5:55 AM in response to alli78by Gyro Gearloose,That was true once, but now with newer iPod touch and newer iOS you can sync Messages, whether iMessage or SMS/MMS, across all Apple devices if you have an iPhone. "When you sign in to iMessage or FaceTime with your Apple ID on your iPhone, your phone number will link with your Apple ID. This lets you use your phone number with iMessage and FaceTime on your other iOS devices and Mac."
