Q: Can't subscribe to iCloud Photo Sharing invite on PC

I'm trying to view photos that were shared with me through an iCloud Photo Album, but when I click on the subscribe button in the email I get the "iCloud Photo Sharing is Not Available for this Device" message.  I've successfully installed and signed in to the iCloud Control Panel on my Windows 8 PC, so I'm not sure what the issue is.  This is the first time I've tried to use iCloud as I'm not an Apple person (other than my iPod, which is why I have an Apple ID account).

The error message also says:

To subscribe you need to be signed in to iCloud on:

  • an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later, or
  • a Mac with OS X 10.8.2 or later and iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later

Looks like iCloud Control Panel on PC isn't even listed as a valid option, but that can't be correct, can it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi jmward23,

If you are not able to access an iCloud Photo Album that was sent to you, it may be because your iCloud account is not set up on your PC?  Take a look at this article to confirm you've enabled iCloud Photo Sharing on your PC.

Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html

However, an easy solution would be for the person who sent you the album to turn on the Public Website in his or her album settings.  That way, you can see the album from a website.

iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202786

If you enabled the Public Website option when you set up your shared album, your friends and family can view your photos and videos from any current web browser using a link that you provide.

    Take care,

    - Judy

    Hi Judy -

Thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, iCloud is setup properly, as I used those exact instructions you referenced when I initially tried this.  And the Public Website option is not a good one for us as some folks who are part of this sharing group have some privacy concerns with making the photos Public (the main reason they chose iCloud instead of other Public options).

Anything else I can try?  I'm still surprised that when I get the error it lists all the Apple devices I can access it with, but not iCloud Control Panel for PC.  That doesn't make sense to me since that is the entire reason that application exists.

    Thanks.

    Hi jmward23,

I understand your desire not to go to a public website.  I'm guessing the person who sent you the shared album invitation may be working with the new Photos application.  Have you tried to access the shared album by going to www.icloud.com and signing in with your Apple ID?

Ask your friend to resend the shared album invitation with you and see if you can access it from iCloud.com.

Get help using iCloud Photo Sharing and shared albums - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201077

I chose not to get iCloud Photo Sharing invitations, but now I'd like to subscribe to shared albums.

If you have an email invitation, open it and click “Don't Send Me Photo Stream Emails” at the bottom of the message. A browser window will open and show that you're no longer receiving shared album invitations. Click “Undo this change.”

If you no longer have an invitation, contact Apple Support and ask to receive shared album invitations. You won't get previous invitations automatically, but you can contact the owner of a shared album and ask for another invitation.

    Take care,

    - Judy
