Q: Prevent Screen Lock During Calls

Since IOS 3, I've been asking Apple to add the option to prevent screen locking during phone calls. This is great for those of us who attend conference calls where you stay on mute until you need to speak to prevent background noise from being unnecessarily heard both other attendees. It's also a great feature for long phone calls where you'll say goodbye and try to disconnect the call but you cannot since the screen is locked.

I've requested this feature 28 times and so far nothing. Here is my 28th submission that I sent to Apple a few minutes ago . I suggested you follow suite if you want this feature.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------

I participate in a number of lengthy conference calls where I stay muted except when I need to speak. Usually I'll plug my iPhone headphones with mic in the phone and continue working on other things while listening to the others speak. When I need to say something, I need to be able to quickly unmute my phone in a timely fashion to do so. 100% of the time, I find that my phone has locked, and I have to waste time fidgeting around with the pass id, finding the phone app, getting it to the correct screen that has the mute button, and finally unmuting the  phone.

If the phone could have a "prevent screen lock during calls" setting, it would remove this extra hassle and promote the use of the phone for business. As it stands, the only work around I know of is to manually tap the screen every few seconds.

Or, just leave the phone app open at the right control screen, let it sleep, and then just touch the home key to unlock with your fingerprint - it's pretty quick on my iPhone 6. Or at the start of a call, settings -> general -> auto-lock and set it to never for the call.

I just suggest those becaiuse if you've submitted it via www.apple.com/feedback that many times, clearly it's not a priority for Apple iOS development, or very few other people are requesting the same feature.

I recently moved back from an Android phone to a new 6S Plus and ran into the same issue you are describing.  I was searching for a solution on how to prevent the phone from locking when I'm on a voice call because like you I participate on conference calls and need to un-mute quickly sometimes to respond to something.

In my search I found something that may be the reason your suggestion doesn't get implemented.  It turns out there is no reason to unlock the phone to get back to the call controls.  I was just using finger print unlocking as suggested by the other reply but found a post that indicated that if the phone is locked during a just swiping to the right will expose the call controls.

Right swipe when not on a call = prompt for passcode (or I can use my fingerprint

Right swipe wne on a call = no passcode prompt and I get directly to the call controls

I obviously need to unlock the phone if I want to do anything else on the phone.

Like galaxyIII from June 16, 2016, I found that this worked one time only.

There's a lot of chatter and frustration going back years on this exact issue. It seems like Apple did try to address it with the "swipe right" solution, which indeed works -- but only once, so there's a bug.

I'm on hold with Apple Technical Support about this very issue right now. Here's how to recreate the problem (which I've tested while on hold with them):

    1. While on a call, force the phone to lock by clicking the power button once.
    2. Click the home button see the lock screen.
    3. Swipe right once -- the phone controls reappear -- great!
    4. Click the home button again to lock the phone again.
    5. Click the home button to see the lock screen again
    6. Swipe right -- The phone asks for Touch ID or Passcode

Many people have pointed out that they want to get to the Mute/Un-mute button quickly when their phone has locked. BUT, you also have to through this unlock silliness just to hang up the call.

I'm on iOS 9.3.4 on an iPhone 6.

that's right dzarras, just to hang up a call, I have the same problem.  Sometimes, I'm just leaving a message, my phone screen has gone to sleep.  To hang up, I have to unlock my phone, but the phone app opens to the dial keyboard screen, not the current call screen.  My messages end up with extra silence on the end while I go through this nonsense.

Thanks for the confirmation @dbouws. I just finished a one hour call with Apple. They were very polite but didn't have any solution or definitive explanation yet. The manager I wound up speaking with is going to research further with engineering and get back to me. She knows about this discussion thread, too.

This bug (as many others) is awesome!

    What the heck.

First — you have to read discussions to realize, that you need to swipe (no hint on screen),

    second — a second swipe doesn't work,

third — use fingerprint, it doesn't open the current call screen (but the normally hidden rest of the Phone.app)

fourth — after one swipe-use, you need fingerprint again!

-> hey Apple, do we need iOS 14 for a solution on this ridiculous behavior?

I Have this problem too with iPhone 6 with iOS 10.0.1 and I have raised this issue multiple times during beta testing. This is happening to my other friends too so this is not only with me.

    Hi Althaf.sk,

Thanks for confirming that you also have this problem. But I'm curious why your post is marked "Solved." We agree that this bug is not solved, right?

    Thanks!

Only the original poster of a thread can mark a response as "solved", so the op must have done so.

There is no bug, it is just not that well documented. I found the solution by mistake.

When you are on the long winded conf call, and on mute, and then need to answer a question aimed at you. Rather than spend 30 s unlocking, unmuting and have the caller assume you have dropped off .  Click the Home button, then the name of the caller or call, that is displayed in large letters above the call time, and you will get the call controls. Well, this certainly works for IOS10  on an Iphone5s.

This is a Bug which was not the case with iOS 9 or previous OS. i have opened a case with Apple to fix this issue and they are working on this.

Why you think screen should get lock when you are on call?
