Q: Etre report lists failed launch items

In researching how to deal with the relentless Safari popup rover.ebay.com, which I never resolved, I ended up downloading and running Etre.  Now, I'm concerned with the multitude of [failed] items it list in its report, particularly the System Launch items.  I don't know what to do about them.  I feel as though I should delete them, but that may be overkill, and I don't know how to do that.  Would I just search for them and manually delete them?

{As far as the rover.ebay.com problem, I ran the Keychain first aid.  Also, there is no rover certificate listed anywhere in keychain.  I do get ebay emails.  I tried searching in Entourage for anything rover-related

and found nothing.)

I use ClamXav nightly.  Over time, I've removed or disabled enough Symantec stuff to keep the beach ball deflated.  No more lock ups.

Thanks to all who respond!

Good to know WebProcess = Safari and MDS = Spotlight!

I thought I had Flash set to Ask, but it must have defaulted on my last update.  I changed it to Ask in Firefox.

I have extensions turned off in Safari, so I turned them on and added Click To Flash.  I left the settings as they came 'cause they mean nothing to me.  I hope I don't have to figure out what to change!

I've often wished I could dictate when Spotlight does its indexing.

I  have no doubt that closing windows/tabs in either browser would speed things up.  I do that if it gets annoying.  Maybe the tweaks to Flash will help some.  Remember, this whole thread started when I was trying to fix the "rover.ebay.com" popup (which I haven't seen lately).  Then I downloaded Etre and found the [failed] stuff, and you guys noticed other issues like Symantec and Ram use.  I'm still concerned about the [failed] stuff.  Can I just delete all those [failed] com.apple…. things.  Won't they just regenerate -- maybe fixed?

AppCleaner was a very recent addition that I've never used -- just sounded good.  I DO have it in my SSD 240 GB startup disk in Utilities.  My default Downloads folder is in my 500 GB HDD.  I've set permissions on all my drives/partitions to allow read/write for administrators and me, but I can't delete anything from that drive except with the "delete immediately" option.  Very annoying!  So, when I try to delete AppCleaner from the Downloads folder, I can't.  I send it to the Trash, have to delete it immediately, and get the "The operation can’t be completed because the item “AppCleaner Helper” is in use" message.  I figured I'll have to reboot from another partition and trash it that way, just never seemed to bother.  Should I just trash it entirely?  I'm not sure I'd ever really trust AppCleaner anyway. It lists an awful lot of stuff automatically when I delete some small application.

The Logitech 3.9.1 I have seems always to work fine.  I think the 3.9.2 isn't compatible with my M525 and M510 mice.

"cmd+shift+4 then hit spacebar" is cute.  I usually use "cmd+shift+4 then click-and-drag" for everything.

I minuses the AppCleaner Helper in Login Items, closed all apps except Preview, and restarted.  Preview restored.  I took a shot of Activity Moniitor:

    Then I ran Etre:

So, as you can see, without Firefox and Safari, things look good.  (By the way, E 157GB drive is my clone of the startup drive updated nightly by SuperDuper!.)  Now, if I can only fix that postfix thing.  Actually, I saw an old fix using Terminal, but am afraid the cure will be worse than the illness:  http://blog.deversus.com/2012/07/fix-for-postfix-in-mac-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion/

I don't know what the postfix issue is, take a full backup & try the fix if you think it fits your issue. Postfix is used to handle mail on the system, normally when the OS tries to send mail from it's own processes (this is separate from your personal email).

The inability to delete form your second hard disk is not right - you also should not need to edit the permissions on any internal disks.

I suspect you need to correct the permissions on your disk or possibly on your home folder (there is a trash folder on the disk & one within the home folder).

Do you have another user account on the Mac? Logout of all accounts & login as a different user. See if you can delete from that disk without the 'Delete immediately' issue. If it works we should reset the home folder permissions, otherwise we'll need to look at the permissions on the disk.

    NOTE:

If you use multiple users at the same time the OS can mount a disk as one user making other users have read only access, you may need to consider which user needs to login first if you use fast user switching often.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
