How to Block Unknown Callers on iPhone & iPad

    http://www.iphonetopics.com/block-unknown-callers-iphone-ipad/

I'm Solution #2 a try. Just a note, I used the last name "Unknown" while keeping first name and company blank. I used the home phone number (808)508-8008, which non of my contacts use.

After saving the "Unknown" contact I have the option to "Block This Caller" via his contact info. After blocking "Unknown", I went back to the "Recents" list and now all of my "Unknown Caller" missed calls is showing up as "Unknown"! It looks like it is now blocked.

Hi..I did everything you said and I just don't get the "Block This Caller" after I tapped "done" in the upper left corner. It only gives me the options of "send message", "share contact" and "add to favorites".  This is my business line and I have had to change to "default" greeting so that he won't get ant personal information off of my recorded business greeting.  Please help I have a guy who is calling asking me perverted questions and I don't want to keep listening to his terrible VM. Actually I delete them now but you get my point. This is my business line and I have had to change to "default" greeting so that he won't get any personal information off my recorded business greeting.

Why can't you report him to your carrier?

    >>  with blocking, namely telemarketers  <<

I found something that works better. I don't just block telemarketers, I report them, (they HATE that).

Sometimes I have to file a report twice, but they usually go away, permanently.   The form takes about 30 seconds to complete.

    Regarding:

We want to block callers who keep their phone numbers from showing up on caller ID.

what if one day you need to look for a job and a headhunter or Human Resources has their number as not showing up on caller ID?  We would miss that call.

I don't understand why we can't buy a regular call blocking app if we research the internet.  I mean I have an app for my bank which can obviously be uploaded to an Android, Samsung, iPhone, or whichever phone everyone in this world owns.  It's a GENERIC app.  So you guys mean to tell me that we cannot upload a GENERIC app to our iphones?

Why would a legitimate head hunter or company HR person obscure their caller ID?  If it's a legitimate contact or company, what do they have to hide?

There is no such thing as a "generic" app. If an app works on multiple platforms, say both iOS and Android - it is actually two apps. The developer has to make a concerted effort to develop for both platforms. Also, in teh case of iOS (iPhone), an app can only be installed via the iTunes App Store, not directly from the internet.

For an unaltered iPhone running native iOS the only source for installing apps is the Apple App Store. All apps must be vetted by Apple to appear in the App Store. So, no, you cannot just download any old app from the web.  And a banking app cannot be truly generic, no app can. Android, windows and iOS are very different operating systems and the apps must be compiled specifically for each operating system.

I think we must face the obvious: the option to block unknown callers (as in "No Caller ID") is missing on the iPhone by design. My best guess is, the authorities may decide to call you and hide their phone number: https://www.fcc.gov/spoofing

"FCC rules on caller ID spoofing

Under the Truth in Caller ID Act,  FCC rules:

    [...]

    • Exempt authorized activities by law enforcement agencies and situations where courts have authorized caller ID manipulation to occur."

Telemarketers are breaking the law by hiding their caller ID, but this is another matter. Also, the question remains why do Google allow it; then again, Google seem to allow many app permissions unless there is a specific complaint.

Nonsense. Apple's "call blocking" in iOS is nothing more than basic blacklisting. As such, it actually has to have a number to put in the blacklist in order to stop the call from ringing through. No caller ID means there is absolutely nothing to store in the blacklist for future matching.

If you want to spout conspiracy theories then perhaps you should think about why carriers steadfastly refuse to implament anonymous call blocking on their cellular network switches?  Anonymous call blocking is pretty much a standard feature on land lines, and it could easily be implemented on cellular networks if the carriers wanted to.  The fact that anybody with a phone, land line, cellular or satellite, is bothered by callers who strip their caller id is ridiculous as the service providers could easily nip the entire problem in the bud. They simply do not want to.

Well, they say when everything else fails the simplest explanation is the most likely. I am no fan of conspiracy theories either, that's why I provided a link to an official and public document that basically says, law enforcement agencies are the only entities allowed to spoof caller IDs. We can of course laugh it off and keep wondering, after reading through 10 pages of "How come is this feature still missing?" type of questions, why Apple chooses to (a) ignore user's requests re blocking spammers and (b) deny devs access to the API calls that would enable this functionality. Cheers!
