Q: New iTunes 12, not recognizing device?

I just updated to the new iTunes 12 but whenever I plug in my iPod touch 5 gen to my computer, it doesn't seem to pop up on iTunes. I'm assuming it's because it's not being recognized? When I still had the older version, my iPod did show up on iTunes but I can't seem to get it to show up on the new one. I know that on the new iTunes, the device should show up on the left side of the screen instead of the right side, but it doesn't show up. I've tried restarting the computer and my iPod but it doesn't help. I'd really like to get this thing working as soon as possible, thanks!

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 8.0.2

Same boat here.  None of the suggested solutions work.  My device is now basically useless.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)

    Would LOVE to see Apple

    (1) Make it easy to download/upload stuff without having to use iTunes (3rd party apps can help, but if I wanted to go that route I would have bought an Android);

If you mean via Windows Explorer, not going to happen.

    (2) Make it easier to just download/upload individual files - syncing really does nothing for me (I have about 200 gb of music so I can't sync my entire collection!) and it would be nice to have an old-fashioned folder to move songs, pictures, etc. manually from the device to the computer without going through all the silly syncing business.

Sync with selected playlists. At the simplest level you create a single playlist that is synced to the device. You then add or remove tracks from that list and sync to update the device with the changes.

All of your content should be in your library (and backed up) so there should never be a need to copy files from the device, other than content created on it which can be done via iTunes (app data) or Explorer (camera roll).

    Hey guys,

I have been battling this for DAYS AND DAYS.  This is what I did and it works without a reboot, you don't lose your files and it is super fast.  This is what I did and I was synching within 10 minutes.

    Download and Install appzapper.com

    Close iTunes 12

Open App Zapper (you do not need to purchase or register it)

Open App Zapper preferences and UNCHECK the box to protect Apple applications

Drag iTunes Application to the App Zapper window and zap away

Run software update and iTunes 12 will reinstall

Apparently apple has released a fix for this issue but it does not "fix" until you uninstall and reinstall iTunes 12

    Hope this helps.

*Latest iTunes update wasn't detecting my device (iPhone 6plus).

*Uninstalled the 3 programs then reinstalled iTunes.

    *Issue resolved, thanks SirBenn21!

Yep. This was the only thing that worked. Once I uninstalled these three programs and reinstalled iTunes 12, it finally recognized my device.

8 months later and this still helped me! I was about to pull my hair out. I uninstalled all 3 and once I restarted my computer and phone this worked automatically. Thank you sooo much for saving my sanity!

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If you have a 64-bit machine try the "for older video cards" version.
