Q: One line of the keyboard not working

I was typing away earlier and all of a sudden the line beginning with Q stopped working, it has been working on and off though.

What could be the cause of this?

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

    Greetings JOJC13,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that some of the keys on your MacBook Pro are only working intermittently. To troubleshoot this situation, I would suggest reading over and working through the information located in the attached article below.

One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond - Apple Support

    Cheers,

    Joe

It can be a bad battery. In Applications / Utilities  start  SystemInformation.app.

Click "power" in the left panel, in the right panel look at "Health Information"

    what is the Cycle Count

what does it say about Condition.

Ah thank you! I'll try that in the morning. Would explain why I'm having charging issues too. It will only charge when switched off.

So it is not a dead battery.

    A.

    Try SMC reset:

    1. Shut down the computer.

Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

    2. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

    3. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

    4. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    B.

Restart while holding the Shift key, it will start much slower. Try the keyboard in say Textedit or so. Still a problem? Time to have Apple do an investigation, they have detailed hardware analysis software tah the "standard" AppleHardwareTest that you can do yourself.

    tried the above, didnt work

the screen has just started flickering as well, in random movements whilst moving the mouse around. Think it would be worth backing up and doing a full system reset?

    Or is it completely funked

Making backups is VERY important always !! At best two or more.

A full system reset? you probably mean a reinstall of the OS with the Recovery Partition. You can do that, it will "refresh" the OS. Does no harm.
