Q: Why "Home & Lock Screen" consume more than 20% battery life in iOS 8.3?

Hi, I also got the battery issue after upgrading to the iOS 8.3.

My battery will drop from 100% to 30% within 4 hour battery usage (you can find this is the data in the Settings->General->Battery Usage->Usage)

When I go to check the battery usage of each app, I see "Home & Lock Screen" use 23% battery within 24 hours.

I just dont understand what does "Home & Lock Screen" do basically, and why it consumed so much battery usage?

Anyone has idea or the similar situation?

I'm using iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3

    marthafromlas cruces,

You're very welcome! Unless you need to be somewhere with your phone, let it charge to the point where CoconutBattery says fully charged along the bottom. I'd repeat this about once a month.

Your phone looks brand new. As long as you don't see any unusual battery drain you should be fine. If you do, try the trick I mentioned above: "allow the phone to drain to just a few percent, turn off location services and background app refresh and then let the phone discharge until it shut itself down. After leaving it for a few minutes, charge it back to 100% and then turn location services and background app refresh back on." Allowing the phone to discharge to the point where it shuts itself down performs a sort of reset that can't be done any other way.

My phone IS pretty new, I got it one month ago and have hardly used it.

I always have location services and background app refresh off anyway. I will let it drain until off and then turn it on.

    What does background refresh do?

Your phone seems in great shape for 500 charges, wow!

    Again many thanks!

Mark, it's fully charged and at 100 percent. Nothing wrong with the battery according to this test! I will let it drain until it shuts off on its own next.

    Many thanks!

    Martha

I could not have said this any better myself "queenlizzybell".  It's absurd that the only solution Apple is providing us with is to limit our usage so much that it renders it useless for us to even have a phone altogether.  Even from my drive to work my phone will go from 6AM 100% --> 8:30AM 90% with absolutely NO usage at all. The screen is locked the whole time.

Then at work, with minimal usage - roughly 10 text messages and 5 web page visits - the battery will go from 90% to 40% or less within two hours of extremely mild usage.

I'm finding I have to charge my phone 3 times per day just to last until I go home.

This has all happened since I upgraded to iOS 8.3...

I don't want to get another brand phone, but I might have to...

Well, assuming you've read this entire thread and tried all the tips and gone through all the troubleshooting steps, aren't you glad you bought Applecare and that Apple will take care of you?

    Hi Friends,

I have to let you know that I have had this problem for many times now. I was able to resolve it in the past, but it appeared again lately probably due to the latest upgrade. However, now I can't find a way to resolve it.

For all of you who think it's about cellular signal etc. know that it (the "home and lock screen") consumes so much energy even when the phone is on flight mode!

This has happened to me now as well, but on ios 8.4! Sorry to say this is related to firmware and NOTHING else. APPLE *****! Sorry, so cheesed of now that I updated without doing my research first, rooky error. My iphone 4S was working hundred percent on latest version of ios 7.1.2, and i am a power user.

So i finaly took the plunge to check out apple music. Also i just recently purchased a fully tested original apple iphone 4s replacement battery form www.appleipodparts.com.

My battery is fully calibrated the correct way and i understand every aspect of the inner working of lithium-ion batteries.

My iphone 4s on ios 7 hardly lost any power in standby mode without being in flight mode, or being connected to wi-fi, receiving 5 bars of signal with 3g and mobile data turned off. I use my phone hardcore in all aspects.

After upgrading to ios 8.4 by doing a clean install, and not doing a backup, and having nothing but standard apple ios8.4 stock apps on the phone, plus doing all tricks possible turning stuff off to the point of making the phone useless, it drains my battery in less than 3 hours from being in standby mode doing nothing in, flight mode and also active mode, receiving a full 5bar signal (did tests both ways), from 100% to nothing!

After these tests did more tests and my battery is beig drained in flightmode by between -600 mA to over -1000mA.

This is criminal fro a phone doing NOTHING! It even gets worst when i take it out of flightmode in a bare minimum state with the display brightness at its

    lowest setting.lol screw you apple!

PLUS...my phone now heats up to the point where it burns my ear if i accept a call...sorry NOTHING changed but for me updating to ios 8.4.

So ****** of now, as i can't downgrade - my iphone 4s was working flawless with amazing battery life.

I really hate apple right now. I have done my research now and this is an issue affecting thousands of people. Only an update will fix this ****, but most likely

not before my iphone burns out or suffer severe heat damage. Been reduced to an expensive piece of junk.

Same problem. iPhone 5c. Rapid battery drain since upgrading to 8.4.X. Battery drained from 62% to 42% over 8 hours of no activity (overnight), in airplane mode, and no apps running. All notifications off except for Apple stuff (Phone, Messages, Facetime, etc.). Auto downloads off, not using Apple Music or iTunes Match. Battery Usage shows Home & Lock Screen as dominant power user @ 36%. ***? Phone doing nothing, no apps running, in airplane mode uses 20% of its battery in 8 hours? Never happened prior to iOS 8.4. Can you spell B U G?

How old is the phone, do you have AppleCare and how many recharge cycles has it been through (Coconut Battery running on OS X will tell you when you plug in the iPhone.)? Have you read through this topic and tried all the tips and tricks?

The phone can't be more than two years old so if you bought Applecare it's still covered under warranty and Apple will replace the battery if it reads under 80% capacity or will work with you in the store or on the phone to fix this problem.

Phone is 1.5 years old. It is under AppleCare so I will contact Apple.

I have done all of the tips/tricks. Have not yet checked the battery cycles. I think I have not clearly explained the key point: this behavior started with the iOS 8.4 upgrade. Usage of the phone has only become far less power-intensive since that upgrade. Before the upgrade, we had all sorts of apps running, location services, notifications, etc. Basically we did not need to pay attention to any of these things; the phone just worked. Then we did the upgrade, From that point on, the phone commonly does not make it through one day without draining the battery. Since then we have shut off nearly everything and routinely keep the phone in airplane mode (in which case why have an iPhone?). Regardless of the battery condition, since this issue coincided with the 8.4 upgrade, and usage has only become less power-intensive since then, I find it difficult to suspect anything other than the OS.

The thing is, I can take almost the exact words of your post and substitute "8.3", or "8.2", or "6.1" or even "1.1" or every other version of iOS that has ever been released and find posts that say the same thing. So either every version of iOS has had battery issues that have not been fixed in 8 years, or the problem is not 8.4.
