Q: iPhone contacts missing - no names, only numbers

There are reports of iPhone contacts suddenly missing -- showing only numbers, no names (except for Facebook contacts).

Anyone have a fix?

Nice for you to "figure it out," take the time to say so, but not tell anyone else how!

I tried this fix and it eventually worked after multiple attempts and turning on and off my phone. Doesn't everyone find it interesting that the contact are missing except for the FaceBook ones! harumph!

    1. Go to icloud.com

    2. Save all your contacts on a word doc.

    3. Delete the contacts from your phone

    4. Save these contacts

    Hope it helps!

In my case the solution was different from previous solutions found on this thread.

I lost the names right after adding a contact I got via Whatsapp, this had not happen on previous occasions doing the same procedure. I realized this had happen when most of my Whatsapp contacts showed without name and then I realized that my phone contacts had gone from more than a thousand to just a couple hundred.

The problem was that I have my Google contacts synced with my phone and apparently Whatsapp turned this off after I added the contact I got from a message.

The solution was to go to Settings - Mail - Selected my Google account and toggle ON the Contacts button.

I hope this works for some of you.

    Regards,

    Luis

Just ask Siri to restore your contacts. It worked for me.

I have this issue as well, here is my story thought:

I eventually linked my iCloud account to my iPhone, at that point I lost all of my contacts. Here is what i have:

    1. Favorites list is still there, but only the numbers, no names
    2. When I am in messages,  and I click on a "New Message"  and start typing a name, their names show up with the number
    3. Went to Apple Store and had Genius Bar tech play around with it for 4 hours with no result.  The tech
      1. Reset settings
      2. Back up
      3. Did all updates
      4. Do a contact sync with a different phone
      5. and all of the things everyone has mentioned in this thread

So somewhere on my phone, there is a memory of the names associated with the number, but its not in contacts.  Any help with this guys?

So none of this worked for me at first. I had to go to iCloud, retype in my password. Then toggle off contacts. Then go back and retype in my password again. Then toggle contacts back on. Then my contacts slowly came back. Weird. Hope this helps someone else.

I had the same issue.  Tried all of the above tricks to no avail.  Then I remembered that I had deleted  an exchange email account that I no longer use.  Some how all my contacts got imported to that email account.  I then reinstalled the email account to my phone and voila, all the information returned.  I don't know how all my contact info got connected to that email account or why none of it was in any of my contacts  folders (desktop, icloud, laptop), but they are back and I am happy.  Now to figure out how to make sure they are in my Contacts Folder on my desktop, icloud, etc......

I tried everything!! I reset phone, confirmed iCloud was on(several times). And then after accepting defeat, I added a brand new contact that was not previously in my address book, and then BAM...instantly all names reappeared!

You are right about that. Same thing happened to me. I added back the deleted exchange email and all the contacts got synced in again. Thank for enlightening me.

To get the Contacts sync'd to iCloud, sign out of iCloud on one of your iDevices. One of the dialogue boxes that will come up when you sign out is whether or not you want to delete or keep your Contacts on the phone. Click on "Keep". Then sign back into iCloud. It will ask if you want to Merge your Contacts. Merge them.

Once you have done that, they will all be on iCloud and you should then be able to delete the Exchange account. You can verify that they are on iCloud by going to iCloud.com on a computer and clicking on Contacts. You should see all of them there. If they are there, then you can safely delete the Exchange account.

    Cheers,

thanks for this.  I did the same by deleting the exchange account on the phone and installed the exchange app.  When I checked for the contacts within the app they are all there.. thanks again
