Jun 24, 2015 7:33 AM in response to Nellieriversby D.Cohen,Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on the phone.
- Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
- Press and hold on the Home button
- Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.
Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559
If this does not help, restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.
Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

Jun 24, 2015 7:38 AM in response to Nellieriversby D.Cohen,Are you sure you have a carrier unlocked iPhone? If your iPhone is locked by a carrier, you need to contact this carrier to unlock it. Note that this is only possible when the contract has been already terminated and there're no charges left to be paid.

Jun 24, 2015 7:45 AM in response to D.Cohenby Nellierivers,It is on the same carrier apparently - the sim card works in my iphone, the iphone was bought for my daughter by her dad which unfortunately makes me think it is the phone. I'll try the factory restore and get her dad to contact the person and check. Thank you for your help!
