Q: BOOTCAMP Partition lost after some updates in Yosemite

Hello Everyone,

I have a Mac Mini, bought in Dec 2013 and have been using Windows 8.1 since more than a year now. I did update it to OS Yosemite whenever it was available. But just 2 weeks back, I thought that its been many months now since I rebooted into Mac and there might be lots of updates pending. So I did that but right after the updates completed, when the Mac rebooted itself to finish installing the updates, the Bootcamp partition was gone. When I forcefully shut it down and rebooted back into Mac, the Bootcamp was not there in both, StartUp Disk Manager and Disk Utility.

Please Help Me. I have loads of important data on Bootcamp which I cannot afford to lose. Please save me from going into a state of depression if I lose that data.

On searching other threads I found that I have to post the output of the following commands from Terminal. So here's all the ground work done.

Please see below and help.

    Hello again,

P.S that I'm in India and responses from me can be delayed due to time zone differences. Otherwise I'm badly in need of a solution to fix it.

The large gap in your GPT output between GPT3 and GPT4 entries is where your BC NTFS header is most likely located. Was your Windows partition resized at any point in time?

Please use Lost my Windows 7 Boot Camp partition after upgrading to Yosemite. Help! as a reference and download

    1. GPT Fdisk - http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/

    2. Testdisk - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Start a Testdisk scan using http://imgur.com/a/PjmnK as starting UI Guide and run Quick Search. Post a screen shot after Quick Search is complete.

    Hi Loner T,

No I never resized my windows partition but theres an unused amount of space which I did not allocate to either MAC or Bootcamp.

I tried using Testdisk before but it went on for hours without stopping. I couldn't find how to do a quick search in that URL.

Deeper Search can take several hours or overnight. It is a sector-by-sector scan. Patience is big virtue when running Deeper Search.

Press Escape and go back to the previous screen. Press 'P' to list files on the MS Data entry highlighted and post a screen shot. Do the same for the next MS Data entry. You may not need a Deeper Search.

Here is table with the second MS Data entry from the top, which is the most likely candidate. The next one is a further 7 sectors away.

    Install GPT Fdisk (aka gdisk).

Leave your Testdisk display and start a new Terminal Window. You need to use the following steps. If you see any error messages during the following steps, please stop and post back here with the error message. The following steps have values from your Testdisk output (and you can verify) in Steps 7 and 8. Please notice the '+' sign in step 8 (this is called offset notation). The text in parentheses is for informational purpose to describe the action being taken. Gdisk has one-character commands except when entering numbers.

    Rebuild GPT4 using start/end offsets

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (print the full list of parts)
    3. D  (delete)
    4. 4  (part 4)
    5. N  (new part)
    6. 4  (part 4)
    7. 1173555200 ( - Start offset in bytes or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    8. +779968505 ( - Size offset, as opposed to End offset)
    9. 0700 (Windows part type)
    10. P  (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
    11. W (Write the new GPT)
    12. Y  (Yes! really write the new GPT)

This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s4.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see the sample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    5. H (chooses Hybrid)
    6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
    7. Y  (Good for GRUB question)
    8. N  (part 2 boot flag)
    9. N  (part 3 boot flag)
    10. Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    11. O  (print current Hybrid MBR)
    12. W (Write the new MBR)
    13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

YAY !! THANK YOU SO MUCH LONER T !!

YOU ARE A GENIUS !! That worked for me. I guess probably the sectors thing you mentioned is where I need to focus to understand the entire solution.

All the tests worked fine. The first thing I'm gonna do is back up everything from Windows onto MAC. Can never take that risk again.

I owe you a drink buddy. Thanks again and thanks a Ton !! You are my saviour. Time to sleep peacefully.

Loner T, I've been struggling with a similar issue and hope you could help.  Through my research on this site it seems you've helped many and would like to benefit from your knowledge as well.

I'd like to be able to boot into Windows and can't do it.  Yes...I re-sized my Mac Partition using disk util, and my Bootcamp drive disappeared from the start up disk utility in System Preferences.  Here's the requisite information, please let me know if you need something else to further analyze. Thank you.

Can you start a new discussion and post this information on the new discussion thread? This avoids confusion for users who read the discussions after the problem has been addressed.

Can you use Lost my Windows 7 Boot Camp partition after upgrading to Yosemite. Help! as a reference and download GPT Fdisk and Testdisk and start a Testdisk scan?
