Q: App Store Cryptic Alert Window with Letter "A's" pop-up when opening Calendar

Upon opening Calendar Version 8.0 (2034.9) in Mac OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite, a very strange looking alert window pops up that I'm unable to get rid of without restarting my computer.

The window contains letter A's inside boxes and has a field that you can type into. There is no "close" button and obviously something is wrong here.

It keeps happening. Any suggestions on what to do next?

    Kate,

Have you attempted to eliminate duplicates using Font Book?

Do you have Lucida Grande enabled? If not, it should be.

Thanks for the suggestion Fred, my Font Book didn't find any duplicates and Lucida Grande was enabled.

I have not seen the problem again today but I'm not sure if it's resolved yet, either. Will keep an eye open over the next few days of use to see if I get this window again.

    More information:

This happened again while using Chrome. I had Calendar open at the same time but was actively typing into Chrome.

The strange alert window came up. I opened Terminal to try to find the process that was responsible for it. I killed processes one-by-one and found the process that made the strange alert window go away: storeuid

So this alert window seems related to whatever storeuid is. Can anyone tell me what that means? Should I be reaching out to Apple to report this somewhere?

    Thanks,

    Kate

    Kate,

AFAIK storeuid is a normal process, and is a part of OSX. It is currently running on my system. I have unsuccessfully tried to reproduce your observation.

Have you had any problems with the App Store on you computer?

If you have had problems, perhaps: X yosemite app in app store purchases stuck may provide some clues.

Yes, I see my App Store is having problems now.

In the Updates section, I was able to update OSX HP Printer Driver Software this morning. But there is an iMovie Update that will not work. I click the Update button and then get the spinning gray icon and nothing happens. The icon will either sit there indefinitely, or will go away after a few seconds, but regardless, the software update doesn't start and the button returns to normal.

The Mac App Store's icon in my dock showed a red "2" even though there was only 1 update remaining, not 2.

I tried logging out of the store and logging back in. I only have one Apple ID. Issue persisted.

Thank you for the link to the discussion with instructions on how to reset the App Store. I turned on the App Store's debugging menu using Terminal. I used that to clear the cookies and reset the application. I did it a couple of times. Then I quit the store, turned off the debugging menu, and went back into the store. I still see the iMovie update available. My App Store dock icon is fixed now and only shows 1 update, not 2. I still cannot update iMovie. If I click Update, the button will grey-out and there will be the grey circular loading icon toward the upper left. It just sits there for minutes on end. I'll let it sit and see what happens.

Are there any other suggestions on how I can get the App Store working again so that it will do the iMovie update? I really don't know if this has anything to do with that strange pop-up window I was receiving. I do see that the window is using the App Store icon.Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 11.31.26 AM.png

    Kate,

If I were in your situation, I would follow the steps listed in Troubleshooting the Mac App Store - Apple Support. In the past I have had a similar problem with iPhoto. I trashed the original application and then was able to download the desired application.

What version of iMovie is installed on your computer?

I might have solved the problem. Quitting all applications on both open users, then logging both users out and restarting the computer seemed to help. When opening the App Store again, this time I got a window prompting me to enter my password to log back in. This window looked a lot like the strange cryptic one I was seeing with the "A's," except it was fully readable and was the same window you normally see as a password prompt. After logging in, I was able to get the iMovie update to process and complete installation without trouble. The App Store seems to be behaving correctly now, and its dock icon is correctly showing that there are no updates available.

I can't predict whether the strange pop-up window will appear again, but it did seem to help to clear the App Store's cookies and reset the application, then restart the computer and start over from scratch by logging back into my Apple account.
