Q: Can the iPhone5 be hacked remotely by a hacker?

I work for a technology company and one of our employees shared an incident about her iPhone5 being hacked remotely. The hacker gained access to her device overnight while her phone was unlocked. The hacker watched her baby monitor video feed from the baby monitoring app  (including taking pictures and video from the device), posted about the baby to her FB account, browsed on Safari, including some searches of French books on amazon and Scott Trading sites. When I spoke with the mobile device team, they were not familiar with any iOS security gaps that would allow a hacker to remotely gain control of an iPhone, however, the activities on her device suggest that this is possible.

I found some articles from 2009 regarding a SMS virus that allowed hackers to gain remote access to a device, however, our mobile device team is certain that this gap would be closed by now.

Is anyone familiar with an existing security gap on the iPhone5? What would you recommend would be the next action for her? She is intending to delete her icloud account, change all her passwords and wipe her device.

Well maybe I should clarify...to the best of my knowledge it was never jail broken. However he could have done that prior to the key logger.

He did have plenty of access before just not in the days before the incident. The key logger would not have been loaded remotely. The passwords were very difficult. A long combination of random letters and numbers.

If he had physical access to the phone and was able to jailbreak it, many things are possible.

Sounds like your daughter is well rid of the cad.

HI suzanne. It is very long after your post but I am having the ssame issues. My phone is for sure hacked and remote accessed. Apple completely denies this is happening and therefore has no help to offer me. I've had the phone replaced three times and no one has had access to it. I'm really fed up and seeking any help anyone can suggest. Thanks

The reason that Apple can't help you is that what you think happned could not have happened. Unless you describe what exactly is happening, no one here can help you, either. The fact that you indicate you're having the same problem over three different phones is further evidence that the problem is not the phone itself.

Explain what problems you're experiencing, not what you think the cause of those problems is. Explain what troubleshooting steps you've already taken.

I tend to think it is with the cell phone companies. I found their IP address accessing my email and I live a long ways from their headquarters. They are crocked. They will do anything to mess with a consumer. JMO

That would be a very bad business model. But, if you believe that, you really should give up cell phones entirely.

I have called the police. Many departments don't have any clue what to do. Don't be sure that the police will help. I live in a major city and our law enforcement are very little help.

Believe it? I have proof. Sadly it was being accessed. I have screen shots to prove it. Do you believe that companies won't and don't do illegal things? There are law suits all the time.

I feel exactly the same. Hence this is an Apple run site. I get the feeling there are employees monitoring it at times to keep the general public from believing what they know is true. Giving evidence to what has occurred would only give out my personal information. Now why would I do that? I hate the thought of someone being able to hack my phone, however, it is simply true. It is what it is and some can continue to not believe it. I came here for help not to be discounted and bashed on. It is very discouraging that a person cannot feel safe from attack here. I personally have only been on this a short time and from what I can see it is a joke. But remember folks it is all in your head. BTW my phone is not jailbroke and the security issue at hand is real. Believe it or not.

Facts  do not require "belief". They simply exist. Only delusions and myths require that you "believe". This is a technical support forum. It's not about beliefs, feelings and emotional handholding. If you have a technical support issue, provide details and we will attempt to help. If you don't provide details, there's not much we can do. If you require emotional support, seek the appropriate medical professional.

Apple employees don't do a lot of monitoring here. There is no way they would have time. They mostly evaluate reports made by users. Once you reach Level 2 (should that ever happen), you will be able to report posts you think may have violated the Terms of Use we all agreed to when we signed up here. If the Hosts agree that the TOU has been violated, they will remove the post. If you have a post deleted, you will receive an email explaining why.

By posting them it would also give personal information. Why would I do that if I was concerned about security? I would love to have help but not at the cost of exposing more personal information. Makes no sense as well as some of the aggressive behaviors on this forum. Some don't want to admit what is the truth the choose to accuse and bash others. Not just toward me. This is apparently an ongoing issue/problem. No one needs to be treated as I have read through this thread. It is shocking that adults act so unkind/narrow minded. Good times for sure lol. Some seem to think they are "big" because of a number next to their name. smh.

Most of us would edit out the personal info prior to posting, but you should make your own choices. Good luck.

Well i can confirm you can be hacked on a not jail broken iphone , I cant confirm if you can be hacked via icloud ( might be able to prove it later )

As for my take on it , and what i can confirm in my case  ,  is 1st they take full control of your PC ,( i have loads of viruses)  then make changes to Itunes and ipod software ( all iphones, ipads ect are based on certain  ipod files ) , Just about every .dll file ( dynamic link library ) that is associated with a apple .exe file is full of errors or heavily modified and actually modify`s  my iPhone , i have more than 10 versions of apps that cannot be found on google or has ever been available from iTunes.

Im sure lots will like to argue my point of view , and im not sure we can have these discussions on this forum , but if anybody with in-depth knowledge wants to discuss  my assessment  , im happy to detail all in a forum of their choosing , i can assure you i will win the argument as ive got loads of apple developer software on my PC ( that i didn't download or install as im not a developer )  and loads more warnings like this ,

invalid map/set<T> iteratormap/set<T> too longvector<T> too longApple Software Update Testing Mode Enabled**  If you see this otherwise, please contact your system administrator.  **This configuration could reveal potentially malicious packages not signed by Apple.

Looking forward to taking this discussion forward
