Yes - i have done this many times. Still its not recoginizing/identifying the ethernet port on ADSL modem. Simply blinks that its not able to find the etherner port on ADSL modem.
2011 airport should be Gen5 but it could be Gen4.. tell me the model number from the base please.
Setup the adsl modem to work as router.. if you current run it in bridge.. don't.. full router.
Setup the Airport Extreme in bridge mode..
Once you complete the setup plug the modem into one of the LAN ports of the Extreme not WAN.. you can try each port in turn.. if none work then the airport extreme is probably fried.. assuming if you plug the modem directly into a computer it works.
Fried ethernet ports is fairly common if they got spiked by lightning for example. And the Gen4 AE does have some issues where the internal power supply gets tired and stops producing clean power for the ethernet chip and things go from bad to worse.
This can be a hardware fault.. either on the AE or the Modem.. plug a switch in between if you have one available can also prove that is the case.

Jun 25, 2015 6:56 PM in response to alnhkby ClosetotheEarth,I think you may have failing equipment. You have gone through all the troubleshooting steps, the other router works, it suddenly failed without any other changes made. That is what leads me to believe that you have a passed away Airport...

Jun 25, 2015 7:21 PM in response to LaPastenagueby alnhk,Model Number is A1354...yes i also tried with the bridge mode with extreme LAN . Still no luck, the issue is that the airport extreme ethernet port seems to be dead , even i tried to connect extreme ethernet port on airport to laptop, nothin is being linked up between laptop and airport.

Jun 26, 2015 9:08 AM in response to alnhkby Bob Timmons,Unfortunately, Apple does not offer repairs or repair parts for the AirPort Extreme.
The A1354 model is out of warranty, and since the model was discontinued in June 2011, it would not be eligible for replacement coverage under AppleCare.
If you have an Apple Store near you, take the AirPort Extreme to them to let them have a look. Otherwise, you can contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options......which would appear to be buying a new router.
