Q: After upgrading to Yosemite computers on my network are not showing up in shared on finder

Hi Everyone!

I have two mac computers and iMac (early 2009 version) and Mac Book Air (late 2010 version). Both are on the latest version of Yosemite 10.10.

Ever since upgrading my computers to this OS, I noticed that the "Shared"  section of the finder no longer shows the respective other computer. I can get to the computer by "Go/Connect to Server" and typing in the ComputerName.local. I can also control each other's screen by using screen share, but only via iCloud. Airdrop also works, but in case of one computer AirDrop is not listed in Favorites and works only when I have both launch airdrop at the same time.

What's interesting as well is that my Time Capsule does who up on both computers in the "shared" part of the finder.

Both computers' settings in System Preferences/Sharing have not changed since Mountain Lion.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I'm having extremely similar issues to what all of you are discussing, except that my server (2007 imac with no LCD, running headless) is still running Lion because it was not "eligible" for mav/yosemite.

Before I updated to Lion, I had very few issues.

I also used to have the server on wifi and I thought wifi resets were the issue.  My temp fix for that was to create a daily calendar event that turned the wifi off and back on.  I have since connected it on ethernet and disabled the wifi and the problems have gotten worse.

Initially my issues were just with my PLEX server running on the iMac, but now I can't screen share to get into the server unless I've just forced a reboot.

My wife and I each have a macbook running Yosemite and neither machine will connect to the server once its been running for a while.  Even the "go-> connect to server" route has limited success.

I had the same issue - and some of the comments in here pointed me to a solution.  Basically on the target computer file sharing had been set so that I shared via windows sharing.  (Go to files sharing and click on "options".)  I have it set up for both SMB and AFP sharing - but somehow it also had me (and no one else in my family) set to work under "Windows file sharing"  I turned that off and I have access via Screen Sharing again.  (For the life of me, I could not figure out why my iMac (2009) was showing up as a PC.)

Some posts here helped me solve the issue (after months of it not working). Unfortunately, I changed a few things at once so I'm not sure exactly which of these did the trick:

    • In sharing, I changed "Remote Management" to "Screen Sharing"
    • Under File Sharing, there was an external drive being shared that wasn't attached. I removed it from the list of shared locations
    • Under File Sharing Options, I disabled Windows sharing and made sure smb and afp were checked
    • I enabled screen sharing for "All Users"

    PonyStorm

For me (and I think a bunch of others) it was just took turning off Windows sharing.  I don't know how it got turned on on my system - but once it was turned off things have worked perfectly.

Easy to follow, step-by-step instructions that actually worked!

    Thanks.
