How do i switch my mac's connection from wi-fi to ethernet? I tried a YouTube tutorial which seemed simple, but it didn't work.

No Mac that networks with iOS 8 can run Mac OS Classic operating systems. You can't run iOS 8 on an iMac.
Not knowing which iMac you have makes it difficult to know the advice to give you. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to identify your operating system.

Different iMacs have different Ethernet options.
