Contact Apple to modify an AppleCare agreement: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

It isn't necessary to register the watch to receive AppleCare. The warranty is tied to the serial number not a name.

True, it is not necessary to register the agreement.

However the name on the agreement is registered to the person who purchased it.  If someone wants to change the name the agreement, they must contact Apple.

No, it isn't. If the purchaser bought AppleCare Plus it is already enrolled to the serial number of the device, NOT the person.

There are two types of registration.

Product registration - This is the serial number of the product which is covered by the agreement.

-- As you mentioned, this is done at time of purchase.

Agreement registration - This is the name of the person on the agreement.

-- This is also done at time of purchase and is the name of the person who purchased the agreement, as I mentioned above.

    What's the difference?

-- Product registration: Determines service coverage of a specific serial number.

-- Agreement registration: Determines who is the legal owner of the service contract (agreement) and may request a refund for the agreement or have it moved between devices (where applicable).

It may work that way for HP or others but not Apple.

If you buy a Apple Watch and give it as a gift the standard AppleCare one year warranty is tied to the serial number of the Watch (or iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc). No registration is required.

If you buy an Apple Watch and buy AppleCare Plus at the same time (or iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.) the salesperson adds the policy to the serial number at the time of the purchase. It is not tied to they buyers name it is linked to the serial number. If you sell the device the policy goes with the device and the serial number which is all you need to get service.

Since the OP posted in the Apple Watch Hardware category there is only AppleCare Plus available and you have 60 days to purchase it. If you do it is tied to the serial number of the device you are buying.

If someone gave them one of the boxed AppleCare agreements purchased from Amazon or somewhere that will not work with the Apple Watch. If the OP purchased say a Mac and posted in the wrong area and someone gifted them a boxed AppleCare they need only get the agreement number and register it with the serial number of their device. If the person who gave it to them registered it with a different device and serial number there is no way to transfer it.

The OP can check here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do Notice it does not ask for a name.

I'm sorry we aren't communicating successfully, Deggie.

As we aren't making any headway here, I'll clarify once again for anyone who happens upon this thread and needs the information, and then move on.

    ---------

Product registration - This is the serial number of the product which is covered by the agreement.

Agreement registration - This is the name of the person on the agreement.

    What's the difference?

-- Product registration: Determines service coverage of a specific serial number.

-- Agreement registration: Determines who is the legal owner of the service contract (agreement) and may request a refund for the agreement or have it moved between devices (where applicable).

    ---------

How to validate the information above:

    • Read the links
    • Call Apple, let them know you'd like to change the name of the registered owner of your AppleCare agreement (referred to as "Transfer of ownership" in section 10 of the legals), and ask to speak with Agreement Administration (the group that manages AppleCare agreements like AC+ and APP).  They'll be happy to explain the process of changing the name of the person the agreement is registered to (what the OP requested: "How do I change the register for AppleCare I received as a gift?").

    Cheers,

    Madison

For all those reading who need the CORRECT information:

There is no "agreement registration" for AppleCare Plus that requires the name of the person. The original warranty and the AppleCare Plus (extended warranty) are both tied to the serial number of the product. Did you try the link I provided with your Apple Watch? All you enter is the serial number.

If I decide to give my Apple Watch to someone as a gift, and it has AppleCare Plus on it, there is nothing that has to be done with the AppleCare Plus warranty. Nada. You don't have to call Apple. If a week later something happens to the Watch and the person I gave it to makes a Genius Bar appointment and takes it in they will not ask the name of the person on the warranty. They will enter the serial number and tell them they are covered. Period.

As **** as listing the product on Apple, if it was entered the person who gifted it can sign in with their Apple ID and remove it and then the giftee can list it. If the person who purchased the Watch doesn't have an Apple ID it is not listed anywhere.

I have gifted several Apple items, I have given away products that still had AppleCare or AppleCare Plus on them and no one has ever had to call Apple to change the agreement.

    Cheers,

    deggie.
