Q: GPS data not available to apps after iOS 8.3 update

I'm using a Wi-Fi only iPad with remote GPS connected via bluetooth (Bad Elf GPS Pro).  Following update to 8.3, the GPS position data from the Bad Elf receiver is not available to other apps on the iPad that require it (in particular, Seattle Avionics FlyQ efb).  Bad Elf bluetooth connection is good, and the GPS position data is displayed on the iPad using the Bad Elf accessory app, but it appears to not be available to the FlyQ app.  Spent hours with tech support and other paths trying to fix this problem, including reloading iOS 8.3 update and applications, and even bought a new Bad Elf GPS receiver.  I think this is a fairly common hardware/software combination (Wi-Fi only iPad, Bad Elf GPS, FlyQ app) for private aircraft pilots, so would expect others to be seeing the same problem (unless they were smarter than I was, and delayed updating their OS).  Have others experienced this problem or found a solution?  Quite frustrating, as navigation is the primary use for my iPad.

Beautifully written! It captures the essence of this fiasco brilliantly. Thank you.

I fear Apple's sheer size will ultimately be their downfall. It has happened to every single company out there that grew to dominate its competitors. Hubris is the first sign that they are standing on the precipice of a looming decline. And the other sign is the CEO taking their eye off the ball and trying to paint the company as a world do-gooder. Note Mr. Cooke's comments over the past few years on social issues. That said, Mr. Jobs would never have allowed something like this to occur. There are tons of stories about how he was a tyrant, but that tyranny led to incredible products, shareholders be damned - and they never were because those products ultimately paid huge benefits for the shareholders. Mr. Cooke, on the other hand, is no Steve Jobs. And he never will be. And Apple will never be the same, either. Just look at this issue. Does anyone really believe this would have occurred under Steve Jobs?

That revealing second when one has nothing left to say except scrape the bottom of the barrel by bringing the late Steve Jobs into their argument. Many do and are also told, "how do you know what he would have done?" Sorry you have lost all credibility here. Good luck with your hobby flying and iOS9.

Great, petermac87, I take that as a legally water-tight guarantee from you that Apple will fix this in 8.4. Many thanks.

I couldn't wait any longer, bought the STATUS, that connects via WiFi. .......for the 10- fold price.

Only some one mean (which I am not ) would think that this was maybe the secret intention behind not fixing the problem.

No, I would not even dream that anyone in control of this honorable Empire might think that way....:D

    petermac87,

Why would you say I was scraping the bottom of the barrel by bringing up Steve Jobs' name? I was being very complimentary and, indeed, holding him up as THE example that Mr. Cooke or anyone in the CEO seat should follow. You call that scraping the bottom of the barrel? Really??? I didn't realize expecting an organization or a leader to be held to a higher standard - a higher standard that was in fact THE standard - was considered "scraping the bottom of the barrel". To me, it sounds as though you are scraping the bottom of the barrel by attempting to twist my words into something with an entirely different meaning. And your post really did not contribute anything worthwhile to this thread.

    Good luck.

I Did the same thing, except I bought the Bad Elf dongle with lightning connector for under $100. Works great.

Good try at squirming, but as I say, you are no longer a credible poster.

    Good Luck

I don't know if there is a competitor to Bad Elf but I would seriously consider making a change. I read the link you posted before it was deleted and these guys do not know what they are doing and how to test software. They should consider only selling a one vender device with their own in-house software.

No matter how many times you post it they will delete it and it still shows Bad Elf in a very poor light. You don't wait until the public release to test the software with your hardware/firmware and there aren't tons of iterations to test.

I Agree with you on the bad elf statement.  What I can't believe is that I can't post a web link regarding this very topic without the sphincter police stating that my post was removed for being speculative. I never said anything in my post. i just posted a link. How is that speculative!?SMH.

It is no longer speculation now since it has been released.
