Q: Photos Won't Import: "Database error: failed to persist version"

Hello everyone. I'm importing all my photos into Photos for OS X, and mostly loving it. I've been exporting my albums from Aperture into a folder, then importing into Photos. Worked fine for the first few days, automatically uploaded to iCloud, everything synced to all my other devices, great.

In the last couple days, anything I import comes up with this error:

"Database error: failed to persist version"

Photos seems to think these photographs are not valid files, though they are. I get the preview in Finder, I can open them in Preview and any other image application.  The files that didn't work initially were JPEG from a Nikon D700 so I figured it was something specific with that camera, but then I tried importing files from a D300 that previously worked a few days ago, and now they don't.

I've tried:

  • Processing them with JPEGmini first
  • Exporting from Aperture again (both originals and versions)
  • Importing into particular albums, rather than just importing
  • Restarting machine

OS X 10.10.3, all updates applied.  What the what? Anyone have a similar problem? Thanks!

Have you tried Repairing your library?

I did not know of the repair function.  I just tried it, and while Photos does allow me to import most of the photos now, it is still rejecting a small amount of my photos with the same error.

Is there no other solution apart from continuously repairing my library (and even that did not solve my problem)?  It's a shame this software is not complete.  I really like their intentions.  Importing JPEG images is pretty standard stuff here.

You don't need to export from Aperture and import into Photos.  Just drag your Aperture library onto the Photos icon in the Dock to convert the library to a Photos library?  That will include the master and edited versions, keywords (although somewhat hidden in the Into pane for each photo) projects, etc.

Be sure to have a current backup copy of the library before converting.  Also, if you can, repair it for permission and database like iPhoto can to help assure a clean conversion.

Going from Aperture straight to Photos is great, but I'm choosing to export first because I'm using this as an opportunity to trim my library quite a bit.  My Aperture library is 250GB and there are lots of RAW files scattered all over, I'm exporting album by album and cleaning it up.

However, none of that matters because I can't trust Photos now.  It worked perfectly for me for a week or so, but this error is a big one for me.  If it's something that can be fixed that's great, I know no software is perfect.  But if Photos is going to behave irrationally like this, I won't touch it.

Restarting your system does not clear up RAM same way as does a Shutdown wait a minute power up - so stray bigs of apps could be giving you problems.

Apple may have dropped some detail you were using that prevents the import -- for example in ILIFE09 Iphoto - existing Black and white PSD files displayed correctly - while new imports didn't work - had to change them to RGB.

The support pages below may help you find out the problem -- feedback is one way to let apple know there is a problem - another is set up a support call.  They have to be able to duplicate a problem to fix it.

There has been an overabundance of posts from users with Canon cameras with the same problem.  There's obviously an incompatibility between 10.10.3 and the Canon jpeg files.  Be sure to tell Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html.

My Nikon photos that initially worked now won't import.  I'd understand if they either worked all the time or not at all, but it's inconsistent.  Will send feedback and hope for the best.  Might try recreating my Photos library from scratch.

As Photos seems to be geared toward ICLOUD synchronization to other devices - from one article on what files are allowed in -- PSD files are excluded.   My cannon scanner does allow selection of a version of Jpeg (its either Jpeg2000 or Jpeg2 something like that) that does not reduce clarity of the picture when saving after editing -- I can't open those files in CS3 photoshop without a plug in - did not see if I could import them into IPHOTO.

Also it may be the color type has to be RGB not any other option available.

FWIW, I have no problems importing PhotoShop psd files into Photos. I am not using iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream, but I am using iCloud Photo Sharing.

    PSD files are excluded.

Not so.  That article was wrong. Photos supports Photoshop and JPEG200 files.

Is there a way to completely delete my library and start from scratch on iCloud Photo Library?

I've deleted my entire Library, and initiated a delete in iCloud preferences, but it says it will take 29 days to delete.  I've started a new Photos Library, but it has started to download the 30,000 photos I uploaded (which are scheduled for deletion).

I want to delete everything and start completely over.  Is there a way to do this?

Just for another data point, I also started running into this error frequently on 10.10.3.  I tried upgrading to 10.10.4, but that didn't change anything, I still got the error consistently for certain photos whenever I tried to import them, even though I could view them fine in Preview.  Doing the repair seems to have fixed the problem for me.
