Q: Playlists and music are not syncing (can't add any music to my iPhone now)

I've been having a lot of trouble with Apple Music! I have a pretty large iTunes library (25k) and have been using iTunes Match. At first things seemed okay on my iPhone 6. I added a couple of albums and it was good.

Then I got iTunes 12.2 and the music I added from Apple Music showed up greyed out. Nothing I did seemed to make those songs want to become available. I saw someone posted to delete the songs from the iPhone library and then add them using your Mac and then it would show up on both. No dice. I toggled Music on and off and had it re-download my music library to my iPhone. I still can't see the albums I added on my Mac (and which are clearly in my Mac library).

Now I can't add anything to my iPhone library. When I browse for an album not on my iPhone and click the "Add to My Music" button, it says okay, does the check mark thing, and then a few seconds later the icon switches back from a checkmark to a plus sign.

Basically I can't add music to my iPhone at all because I can't sync it to my computer (since now it syncs only through Apple Music), it isn't syncing changes from my Mac to my iPhone, and I can't add anything from Apple Music to my iPhone. Help!

iPhone 6, iOS 8.4

Awesome suggestion. Quick question. When you make changes to playlists on your Mac, do they sync passively to your iOS device? By passively, I mean do the changes appear on the device without you having to do anything?

It sounds like there are a couple different issues going on in this thread, but I believe I can fix this one. I had the same issue, finally figured it out:

    1. On your phone, in Music, go to My Music, make sure you are in Library (at the top).
    2. Below, you'll see a tab that says Artists, with a little down triangle next to it. Select the triangle.
    3. In the menu that shows up, there is a switch for Show Music Available Offline - Unselect this.

When that switch is selected, your phone will only show music that is actually on the phone. I'm not sure how mine got selected in the first place, but it took a good long time for me to figure this out.

I believe this is separate from the issue where music in OS X itunes is greyed out. I haven't had that problem, but my hunch would be: in your OS X itunes, go to Preferences -->> General  -->>  check both Show Apple Music iCloud Music Library. I know people have been suggesting unchecking those, but I do not think that's what you want.

Fixed! I just went to music settings on phone and turned off iCloud music library, turned it back on and used the replace option. Playlists are now synced from mac.

Similar issue, I was trying to fix my iPhone and iPad not syncing with my Macs and tried to log out of iTunes and turn off iCloud Music and turned them back on on my iPad and iPhone.

But it seems to be working now after many hours. So was likely just a server issue.

I just added a new playlist to my Mac, added an Apple Music song to it, and when I checked my iPad about a minute later it was there, so for now it is working good.

There are a, potentially, bunch of issues happening with Apple Music that are breaking down the whole process. This tip above sort of solved one of my problems, which was one specific song I added on my iPhone to my library wouldn't show up on my iPhone.

However, I still can't seem to add something from my Mac or my iPad and trigger it to make the changes to my iPhone. I added an album and two playlists on my Mac and for some reason it won't load on my iPhone but it shows up just fine on my iPad. Changes I make on my iPhone, like adding things to my library or playlist changes, show up on my Mac.

I guess there are a bunch of things happening and not happening. What would be *amazing* is basically something to indicate the library has been updated or some way to trigger it to refresh the library. I've tried quitting the app on my iPhone and reopening it but it's unclear if that refreshes it. I also can't tell if some of the problems are simply server issues, like the server is down and not loading.

I have read hundreds of posts on this topic in different forums over the past day, and still not sure about anything here. So I will try to put it in the simplest way:

Is there a way to use apple music and save music for offline listening (which means I guess enabling icloud music library on my iPhone) AND keep my old iTunes playlists both in iTunes and my iPhone?? To me it looks like there isn't a way, but would love to be wrong.....

I'm looking for an alternative to the Music app. My mp3 audiobooks/playlists don't sync the playback position anymore (also with the new ibooks app). It's frustrating...

    Yeah.

    On your phone:

Go to Settings -> Music -> Turn off iCloud Music Library

    On itunes:

Sync playlist and music like you use to with earlier versions.

YYou should see all your music sync to your phone . (After iTunes sync)

Then on your music app there's a FOR YOU and NEW tab when u can search for the music u want . Make sure Apple music is highlighted at the top. Anyway when u search for the album / song u want click on it and there should be three dots to the side of the song . Click those . Select add to my music . Then u should see a check mark saying it was adding successfully . Next click the dots again and select the make available offline . U should see a little device icon show up near the song

IF YOUR SEARCHING for a specific artist...

There's going to be something that says TOP RESULTS , ARTISTS, SONGS, ALBUMS . Under the song category you can select which songs to make available offine and add to your playlist

i believe in order to keep all these songs on your phone u would have to manually manage your music on iTunes so that they won't be deleted on your next iTunes sync . Not sure if they transfer over to iTunes , haven't tried it yet .

    Thanks for this!

And for the content I made available offline - is there a way I can create a playlist that will include this content? What I was hoping Apple will do is REALLY create an music app that will combine my Itunes AND Apple Music libraries in a seamless way - I guess I was asking for too much

If you are only having the problem where playlists aren't syncing, I found a workaround. Go into iTunes on your computer where the playlists still show up. For each playlist, I clicked the heart (Love) and then un-clicked the heart. The playlists immediately showed up on my phone.

no you're fine . What you do is go to my music in the music app . Select playlists at the top . in the middle you should see something that says all playlists . Edit and a new button. Click on new and create a Playlist. Then go back to all the music you added .( u can search through your music collection using the search ) to find the songs you added and click the three dots like you did befire and add to that playlist that you just created

    hope that helps

OH I FORGOT IT HAS AN ADD SONG BUTTON when u create a playlist so just add the songs etc .

I'm pretty sure I'm having the same problem here.

It seems that with the advent of Apple Music and the iCloud Library, the model has shifted from your Library being based on a computer and being pushed (synced) to portable devices, to the Library being based in the cloud itself (i.e. that's where the "official" or "original" copy of music/playlist/etc. data is kept), from whence it is pushed (synced) to all your devices, whether they're stationary computers, or portables.

I have two iPhones (recently upgraded to 6 and haven't disposed of my old 5 yet), and two computers (iMac and Macbook Air), so what I say here is the best explanation I could come up with to describe the behavior I witnessed coming across this bug. Hopefully some Apple engineer will read this, and maybe it'll help. My ability to actually tell what is going on, however, is severely hampered by not having direct access (a web portal maybe?) to the iCloud Library itself, only the mirrors of it on my devices (which are flawed and evidently do not update very quickly).

I can't speak for the first device I activated (my iPhone 6) because there was no other platform to see if it was syncing with. When I updated and activated Apple Music and the iCloud Library on the others though, it seemed as if there was a brief period (on the order of half an hour) during which changes were synced properly, including playlists, ratings, play counts, and song removals (I'll get to additions later). After this period ended--I cannot say definitively what ended it but I suspect it has to do with expiring/terminated connections), absolutely no more changes were synced at all, with the sole exception of music library additions. Moreover, any changes I made on my iTunes were actually reverted seconds later--I would try to delete a playlist and it would pop back up before my eyes.

The basic problem to me seems to be related to devices pushing updates back to iCloud's Library. For some reason devices are suddenly and irreversibly losing their ability to push Library changes back to iCloud. The only exception is adding songs, which I suspect is because the actual change is performed within Apple's servers (your device submits the addition request to Apple Music, which then passes it to iCloud Library), while things like modifying playlists and deleting songs must go directly from your device to the cloud.

That's my best guess. I have a decent knowledge of programming and networking and such, but I'm by no means an expect. All I know is that if this crap doesn't get ironed out, I'm going to have to take a look at Spotify.
