Jul 2, 2015 2:12 PM in response to PinkPlaceboby fredfrompleasant hill, thanks everyone for feedback and additional solutions. had no idea the problem was so widespread. As expected I've had a couple more problems since my first post. Yosemite seems to be creating widespread incompatibility issues and you never know what's next, but here are my last two.
1. this one was my third printer problem since installing Yosemite. the printer stopped communicating with my macbook air. everything was set correctly. the wireless was on with password, email set up, no error messages, blinking lights etc. but if I tried to set up a scan from the printer it couldn't find the mac even though the network was set up. called HP again and though perplexed at first he eventually traced to yet another resetting problem which sounds similar to what one of you reported - the I.P. address. of course I hadn't touched or changed anything, but somehow the address on the mac was changed and wrong and therefore didn't match the printer. the fix went relatively quickly once diagnosed. for those of you who have an HP product, and unless you're a hi tech whiz, or like the challenge, I strongly recommend calling HP support. They've been fantastic all three times, they actually answer the phone quickly, and usually will just take control of your computer with your permission and explain what they're doing. This is a marked contrast to support at ATT (my ISP), Norton, and McAfee which is where part II comes in.
2. I noticed this strange little bug like thing flying around my screen causing the screen to jump up and down, and then lots of weird strings of text and numbers at the bottom of the screen. did some research and although mac is not supposed to get viruses, this one got through McAfee. It is called comet. This is in addition to the fact my mac has been noticeably slower since loading Yosemite, especially when loading up, and several times screen went blank or it just quite and a big error message came up saying it had to shut down. I can't be sure Safari isn't partly responsible but researching online this comet thing getting into macs with Yosemite is widespread and its hard to find and get rid of. I only have McAfee because ATT my ISP, provide it free of charge. But after this I decided to go back to Norton and ordered a download. couldn't install it so a Norton rep got on and worked on it at least two hours and could not install it because of the McAFee but could not find the McAfee software or remove it. Their own instructions didn't work. So then I called ATT and spent another two hours with them and they couldn't fix it either and I got disconnected and didn't call me back. next day I called again, got a different person who wen through all the same instructions but it didn't work, and finally told me I'd have to call McAfee support. tried to explain ATT was providing it so it was their responsibility but she blew me off. So I called McAfee and went round and round with them and they refused to help and told me to call ATT back because their software provided by ATT requires an ATT rep familiar with it to troubleshoot. called ATT back and that person was not there, so another guy went through the motions without success and finally had a great idea to install a new McAfee which would find the old software and knock it out to install the new and that's exactly what happened and we were getting ready to then uninstall the new one and the guy just left me in the middle of the process without saying a word. someone else called back and he said the guys shift ended, so I asked - his shift ended and he just left and didn't even tell me he was leaving? I know I'm off the subject but incase any of you have ATT and this problem be prepared. So now I will try to uninstall it myself and hoping that will work. It's hard to know the root cause, but reading all the postings from mac users on yosemite with this comet virus, again I think this is a Yosemite issue. Of course McAfee is crap and made it worse but it all seems to be tied together. Anyway I hope this will be my last post. good luck to all of you and there are some great suggestions on here. Cheers
