Q: What am I doing wrong with ApplePay?
I have had only occasional success using ApplePay in stores with my iPhone 6.
Can someone tell me EXACTLY the procedure?
1. As the purchase is being tallied, I put my phone (turned on but asleep) right next to the reader.
2. They ring up the total and ... usually NOTHING happens. I end up having to pull out my debit card.
This procedure HAS worked a small handful to times (at the Apple Store, McDonald's, Sprouts, and Subway). When the total is ringed up by the clerk, the phone wakes up and asks for the fingerprint to confirm. Bingo!
But in a majority of cases (about 75% of attempts at these same store), nothing happens.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to wake it up and tap on Passbook first or something?
When it works, it's great. But mostly it's a dud for me.
Thanks!
iPhone 6, iOS 8.2

try the below:
Remember to hold the touch ID first, while still holing the the touch ID hold to the terminal this will take out the payment from your default card.
Alternativly if you want to choose another card, go to passbook and select a card first then move towards terminal or hold against terminal and phone will wake up.
If these are not working then it could be an issue with the terminal at the shop and they may need to upgrade their contactless terminal or even increase the amount that can be purchased using Apple Pay.
Pay with Apple Pay in stores
To pay with Apple Pay using your default card, hold your iPhone within an inch of the contactless reader with your finger held on Touch ID without pressing it. (You can watch the demo to see how it works.) If you need to choose between Credit or Debit on the terminal, we recommend that you choose Credit to get the most consistent Apple Pay experience. Choosing Debit might not always work with some older merchant payment terminals and backend systems.
Pay with a different card on your iPhone:
- Hold your iPhone near the contactless reader without placing your finger on Touch ID. Your iPhone will wake up, and you'll see your default card on your screen.
- Tap your default card. From the list of cards, tap the one you want to use.
- Place your finger on Touch ID and move your iPhone near the reader to complete the payment. You might also need to sign a receipt, depending on the store and the transaction amount.
Pay with Apple Pay in apps
Pay with Apple Pay within an app using iPhone or iPad:
- Tap the Buy with Apple Pay button or Apple Pay button.
- Review your payment information and contact details. Enter other billing, shipping, and contact information if necessary. Apple Pay will store that information, so you won't need to enter it again.

- Place your finger on Touch ID to complete the payment.
When your payment information is sent successfully, you'll see Done and a checkmark on the screen.
