Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I am experiencing the same problem.

Today I cleaned my screen with a microfiber cloth and a bit of water.

The screen was very clean, except for the top left corner: There were some "dashes".

I first thought it was still wet from the water and furbished a little more.

Now there is an approx 5cm x 1cm big spot, which is reflecting much more than the rest of the screen.

My Macbook Pro Retina is from Mid 2012.

I already encountered screen problems, in form of ghosting, which led to my screen being exchanged.

Since this thread started, it seems a lot of people have this problem, getting more and more.

I would expect Apple to act, since I'm not willingly paying around 2000€ for a computer with a screen, which loses the AR coating when cleaning it.

Here is a picture of the spot:

    Best regards,

Have you contacted them? They will not see your post here, so they will not know you have an issue unless you contact them. These are only user to user forums.

    Good Luck

Just wanted to chime in with an update. I sent an email to Tim Cook (CEO of Apple) knowing that he would never read it, but sent it anyway. Well I got a response back from Apple Corporate Executive Relations and we talked briefly on the phone about the problem I was having and all of you. She said that Apple was going to replace my screen free of charge. I do not have Apple Care or any sort of warranty. I told her this is a Manufacturers Defect and not cosmetic damage. The engineer department gave her the approval to replace my screen for free, so they must be well aware of what is happening to the Retina screens.

Hope this helps everyone or at-least gives them hope!

Do you have the contact for Apple Corporate Executive Relations? I have my genius bar appointment tomorrow and I want to make sure I have other options if the store indicates that they cannot fix it for me.

I have same problem with 2014 and 2013 Macbook Pro's and I do not know what to do about that. It seems the quality of expensive apple products declining because it is not the only problem I encountered with Macbooks.

Well, I just joined this elite club yesterday. I have been a mac user, enthusiast and evangelist for more than 20 years.

Being in the graphic design trade, and due for an upgrade due to my failing iMac, last year I purchased the top of the line MacBook Pro (retina, 15-inch, late 2013 with discrete graphics) for its lovely screen and excellent performance, banking on its resale value being high enough that I would be able to upgrade to a new model again in 2-3 years.

Yesterday afternoon I was in a consultation with somebody who sat next to me and watched as I tried gently to clean her finger-prints from my screen using a soft micro-fibre cloth, slightly moistened from a fresh glass of water that she had just handed me. At first I took it to be a small greasy mark at the top left edge of the screen, but on gently rubbing at it, the stain started to spread further before I realised that something else was at play.

This machine has spent a little bit more than a year almost exclusively in clamshell mode on my desk. Very occasionally, it gets packed into a lightly padded Cellini carrying sleeve and Thule backpack, designed and bought specifically to hold this model comfortably. I have owned various MacBooks and iMacs over the years and have never used any type of solvent to clean any of them.

After coming across this thread, I am now too terrified to attempt to clean my screen any further. I will post a picture when I can bring myself to look at it again.

Thank you to those of you that are trying to draw attention to this defect, I have added my name to both of the databases and the petition and I will continue to make as much noise as I can about the issue.

I am simply astounded that Apple is attempting to write this off as 'cosmetic damage' or blame the problem on user error.

I know of group of people in the process of contacting a class action lawsuit  lawyer about this issue! My Macbook has the same issue as well, and I'm one of those super anal consumers that reads and researches the proper way to take care of my expensive devices. I went above and beyond to keep my Macbook in pristine condition and this still happened to me . I did not pay Apple to be a guinea pig, sorry Apple but you did not get my consent for me to pay you over $2,500.00 to test your "Retina screen." This issue should have already been handled before you offered it to the general public. I have been an avid apple fan for decades and have always had iPhones and decided to invest in a Macbook, which, I have wanted for years but wasn't sure about the premium price.  My anti-Apple friends are laughing at me right now! I could of brought two two laptops else where and even got myself an iPad and called it a day, for the price of my Macbook. But no, Apple, I decided to go with the Macbook because of Apple's integrity and quality....How stupid was I? Jokes on me.

Sounds like you did not care for your screen.  Shame.

Better off to tell all that to Apple and not us. Do you have an actual question?

Update: It put took a couple phone calls to Applecare and a visit to the Apple Store, but my MacBook Pro is currently getting a new screen. My MacBook Pro is from 2013 and is out of warranty. I referenced this thread and my situation so they made an exception. They attached a code to my serial which allowed he Apple Store to waive the labor and parts costs.

I would recommend that people try calling more than once. It took me two phone calls and some sweet talking but it worked. They did state that if this issue happens again, it will be on my dime next time to fix it. I'm hoping they either addressed this issue in the newer parts or I will have moved onto a new computer before then.

It is truly unfortunate that so many others have not had the same success as I. Hoping Apple owns up to this problem so everyone can get the repair they deserve.
