You can remove the USB once Windows is installed and the BC drivers are also installed. The screens may be different because you may have a legacy BIOS installation in the 5K.

I had previously successfully installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp Assistant.  Windows became unusable after installing more than 230 updates.  Decided to start over.

Deleted and recreated the Bootcamp partition.

During the Windows install I selected the BOOTCAMP partition to install Windows.

When I formatted it as NTFS the BOOTCAMP identification went away and Windows would not install.  I have tried 3 times with the same result.

Before deleting the Windows partition (after the unsuccessful install) Disc Utility shows the 2 partitions as "Macintosh HD" and "Untitled".

I don't think I am doing anything different this time than the time I successfully installed Windows.  I am using the same Install USB Flashdrive as before.

Please disable Windows Updates (specifically any drivers).

Deleted and recreated the Bootcamp partition.

    How was this done?

When I formatted it as NTFS the BOOTCAMP identification went away and Windows would not install.

Did you get an error message?

Yes, I plan to disconnect the Internet cable and disable updates when Windows is installed.

The BOOTCAMP partition was removed using Bootcamp Assistant.  It was also recreated using BCA as originally done.

When I selected the BOOTCAMP partition in Windows Install and clicked Format I got an advisory message that all data would be lost.  I clicked OK.  The little blue donut flashed during the brief format and the partition flashed back but without the BOOTCAMP label.  It was Disk 1 partition 4.  There were messages for all of the other partitions (why so many?) that Windows could not be installed on them.  The disk1 partition 4 was the only one that did not have that message but when I selected it and clicked Next there was an error message.  I can't recall the wording but it said it couldn't create or use the disk area.  I will try the install again and write down the exact error message.

The error message was "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  See the Setup log files for more information."

This was after the format operation.

Before Format there was a message that the partition must be NTFS format

I must apologize.  I noticed that an optical drive and a remote hard drive were still plugged in when I tried to install Win 7.  I unplugged everything but the USB Install drive and the install proceeded normally.

Sorry to have bothered you, but thank you for your quick response

No worries. Glas to see it finally work.

The Windows installation is very sensitive to external storage being connected, because it makes and assumption that you are trying to install Windows on an external disk. Once it is fully installed (including BC drivers), other storage can be connected.

I am also on iMac 5K and trying to install win7 professional x64.

My OS X ver. is 10.10.3 (14D136), using Bootcamp support software 5.1.5621

I am able to start Windows installation and all goes well, but just after the first reboot of the windows installer the keyboard and mouse stop working.

    I did try:

Using wired USB keyboard and mouse when the problem appear - they also don’t work - then I did plug them in while in OS X and started bootcamp using them - again they stopped working after the first windows installer reboot.

I did try using ISO source of win7 without SP1 and then another one with SP1 embedded - no avail.

I did try installing USB driver using windows installer (before formation the BOOTCAMP partition), pointing to the USB - WININSTALL/Bootcamp/Driver/Intel - I was unable to install USB driver.

I believe what happens is - after the first restart windows is installing a USB driver that is not compatible with the iMAC USB hardware and the USB ports stop working.

I was unable to download the up to date drivers for windows using bootcamp (I have slow internet connection) - I was given link (by Apple support) to manually download them and I got - BootCamp5.1.5621

Is it possible that some (USB) driver is missing?

Your USB needs to be a USB2 device, a USB3 device will not work because the Windows installer has no USB3 drivers. The USB3 drivers are installed after BC drivers package is installed when Windows installation is finished.

    Thank you!

    I am using USB2.0 key.

Up to this screen I can use mouse and keyboard and they work just fine:

    res_20150705_180430.jpg

Now I think this is the second screen (first was something about registry) just after the very first restart of the windows installer:

    res_20150705_180544.jpg

It brings me back to the first screen - "Completing Installation", but now the mouse is frozen in the top left left corner (it does that everytime when stops working):

    res_20150705_180554.jpg

Still the installation will continue until it gets here (and I cannot do anything anymore), it cannot be seen from the picture, but cursor is actually blinking in username field. I always get stuck here.

    res_0150705_18091aaa.jpg

If I power cycle my computer by holding "Option" key, I can select the windows disk and resume the installation (the screenshot below).
The keyboard is working fine (I can select any of the option, but none of them is any good - since they always end up displaying message - something like: "Windows installation cannot complete in this mode":)

    res_20150705_181014.jpg

I am able to resume the installation, but again to up to this screen where I can no longer use mouse and keyboard:res_0150705_18091aaa.jpg

I did try all this (removing the newly created partition in Bootcamp and start from beginning) maybe more than 5 times. Last thing I did, I used different USB2.0 drive - same result. I did even try removing the installation USB key before resuming the installation (read that someone has solved similar problem by doing that) - no change.

Thanks for pointing it up to me!

Apple support gave me this package and another consultant confirmed I have the right package!

I don't know what to do since Bootcamp Assistant is always failing to download - I have tried numerous times - more than 70 (i guess) for the past month!

It always fails with network problem! Sometimes straight from the beginning. Very seldomly it will download for 5-10 minutes - then network problem.

I am on relevantly slow and unreliable internet connection (1Mb/s) - but so far never had such big problems downloading software. I am able to download overnight about 2 to 3GB windows updates for example without any problem.

Can you try this - https://github.com/timsutton/brigadier ? if that does not work, please post back. I have a WindowsSupport.dmg when I tested when testing a iMac5K. which has that version (but you are trusting a total stranger on the Internet ). Even if you can, you will have problem integrating it into the USB unless you use Rufus USB or similar software.

Thanks for the fast replies Loner T!

I am downloading win 8.1 now - I will try installing that one before looking into the solution you proposed (sounds very complicated).

Even now, I did retry downloading drivers with bootcamp about 5 times - it failed every time immediately with network problem...

Maybe someone with 5K iMac (late 2014) will be kind to prepare a key and load it somewhere? Pleeeease!

    Or this also won't work?

    I no longer have a USB+ISO integrated. I only have the 5K drivers for a Nov 2014 5K.

Can you check if you have any apple.com entries in /etc/hosts or /private/etc/hosts?
