Q: imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance

iPad Air, iOS 8.1.2

IM not sure who suggested it but they are genius. I have tried every suggestion in here to sign into FaceTime . One user said that she turned off automatic time and date and did a hard reset by holding down the home and power buttons. Finally!!!!!!! It worked like a charm!! Thank you whoever you are it was making me crazy.

I had the same issue as described initially in this thread and tried all the solutions I could find on the web with no success. I then contacted Apple and they told me it was an engineering issue that they were working on. I asked how I would know it was fixed and I was told to contact them again.

Anyway, to my solution: I logged on to my iPhone -> Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive and noticed that it only had 1 address where I could be reached at for iMessage and that address was my iPhone phone number. I thought at some time in the past I also had email addresses in there? So I added in my Apple ID username (email address) and my iCloud email. I then went back onto my iPad and could immediately login to both iMessage and FaceTime. So one of those worked.

Both my iPad Air and iPhone are on iOS 8.3 and my iPad at the moment is connected on the wireless network only.

I hope this helps a few of you!!

I have an iPad 3. Same issues with messages and facetime.  Doesn't even let me sign in in settings on either messages or facetime - says "check network connection and try again"... I called applecare and was also escalated to Engineering.  It is an issue on Apple's side with Apple IDs.  He suggested to WRITE FEEDBACK TO APPLE at www.apple.com/feedback so they know how many have this problem. It only takes a couple of minutes.

I have tried all the reported Fixes from turning off the imessage and facetime (I couldn't turn off because it was looking for me to login) to changing to automatic time zone to a hard reset and to try the DNS settings. Nothing worked. I read one post that said plug Ipad into power. This worked

This helped me!! When I did the iPad software update that's when it stopped working for me months ago. I just gave up because when I came to the discussion board no one had a solution. I kept the thread up so I could easily come back to it and this morning I just decided to come back to check to see if anything changed. I guess maybe the update erased my email address from the messages and just kept my phone number. So I added my email address. Thank you so much!

SSame problem on iPad mini. Unable to log on to Face Time or iMessage. Tried everything offered on this, and several other boards. Help!

as a new Apple user, for something that is supposed to 'just work' I am completely frustrated and disappointed.

After you shut off automatic date/time and reboot, did you try to log on with that still off, or did you shut it off, reboot, turn it on then try to log in?

I didn't turn it back on. I was then prompted to sign back in at FaceTime and now the error messages are completely gone.

Yeah, that did not work for me either.   This is quite frustrating.  I keep hoping someone will come up with the magic bullet... Thanks tho.

The magic bullet is calling AppleCare. If you can't fix it yourself, it is most likely an AppleID problem and AppleCare has to bump it up the chain. They fix the IDs one at a time...

Apple finally resolved this problem for me.  I could not sign into facetime or messages and did all the fixes on this thread. Then I called apple care.  They bumped my problem up to engineers 2 weeks ago thinking it is an Apple ID problem.  A few days ago I tried to update software to 8.4 and it got stuck in the middle of the upgrade process for hours.  I called apple care again and they exhausted all fixes.  The supervisor made me an appointment at the apple store and authorized a replacement ipad.  When the store gave me the replacement, it was able to update to 8.4 from my backup and signed into messages and facetime.  So there actually is no problem with my Apple ID... it was my iPad. If you have apple care on your device, I recommend having it replaced.

Called Apple Care last Thursday, got some great help.  They bumped it up to engineering, and I was able to log in to FaceTime and iMessage today. Seems to be an issue with various user ID's that only they can fix.   They did call me back with feedback about my status.
