Q: Change iPad Name in Apple Configurator

For some reason despite using Sequential Numbering some of the iPads numbering is out of order and I would like to rename the iPads in Apple Configurator to correct this.

As easy as this sounds (renaming a device) it is not and there does not seem to be a way to rename managed iPads.

If there is a way please could someone let me know the secret of how to do this.

No. If you rename the iPad in the settings on the iPad and plug it into Apple Configurator it will rename it back to the name shown in Apple Configurator.

Itunes is not used - Just Apple Configurator.

It seems there is no easy way.

You could change them under the Supervise tab, doing them one by one, but then, like you said, it doesn't change it on the device. You could then change it at the device. However, if you also you Mobile Manager in conjunction with Configurator, it does not sync the name to Mobile Manager.

I have found that changing the name is a easy as re-configuring them all over again (which means un-enrolling them). No, that is not easy, and the expert in our large school district hasn't found an easier way, either, unless the latest update/upgrade to Configurator makes it easier. It's a little insane, but that's about all I've been doing this summer after I found that many of them were named wrong, or lost their name.

Let me know if you found an easier way. As far as I know, everyone is still looking for a way.

    Thanks
