Q: getting beachball at startup screen . How to reboot?

Macbook pro 13 retina has frozen at startup screen with spinning beachball and will not wake up from sleep or shut down. How do I reboot?

force reboot by holding down power button for 5 seconds, or CTRL+CMD+EJECT+POWER

if that does not respond unplug power and detach battery, reattach battery and power.
