Q: Kernel Securit Check Failure with External Drive

Hi. I run Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp on my Mac Pro (late 2013). The actual Bootcamp partition is located on my internal SSD. Up until recently it worked fine, but today it will not boot (goes straight to BSOD) if I have my external drive (a 4TB LaCie) plugged in (via thunderbolt). If I unplug the drive it boots fine, but then I obviously cannot access the drive, which is where I store most of my large games. I found another thread where a user appeared to have this same problem, but he offered no solution other than running windows with the external drive unplugged. Another user seemed to think this may be a problem with Norton security software, but I don't have that installed as far as I know. Please help!

Do you have access to a Windows PC with a TB port? Are there any pending Firmware updates for the LaCie?

Right now the best I can do in terms of another computer is booting my same bootcamp via vmware, but I'm not sure if that will be helpful. The only way to access the drive in vmware is to share it from my mac. If I end up needing to reinstall windows, at least this way I can make a backup.

I will ask around and see if any friends have a windows machine with a TB port. Are you thinking plug it in just to see if its my computer or the drive that's causing the problem?

As far as firmware on the LaCie, I formatted it with disk utility when I got it. As far as I know there's no firmware on there to update.

The goal is to check if a non-BC driver for a TB can see drives and eject/connect without any issues. The firmware update question was to just check if there were any pending updates.

I tried updating the bootcamp drivers, no luck there. Doesn't look like I'm going to have much success finding a windows machine that will have a TB port on it. So assuming it's not the drivers that are causing the issue what would be the next thing to try?

The OS X driver seems to work fine, but the BC-provided Windows driver does not.

If you are willing to try the ASUS TB drivers for Windows, it is an option. Create a System Restore point (for rollback purposes),  find the driver http://www.asus.com/support/Download/1/39/7/15/sXJUHvgmLQNDiu2I/41/ for you specific OS, and test.

Be prepared to re-install Windows, if necessary.
