Q: slow internet on wifi; normal to fast on personal hotspot

hello..

i had just bought my first mac. and this is my first time to post to the support community.

  • 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
  • 16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
  • 2TB Fusion Drive
  • Intel Iris Graphics

after the initial set up, i noticed immediately that internet connection using my current wifi router is very slow. [im using a linksys E2500 (ISP speed at 5mbps)]. so i tested the speed using my HP laptop and the results were the usual 4.5 - 5.3mbps. using my iphone 6 to test the speed revealed the same results. i tried configuring the bluetooth setup (after reading one post from the support community with a solution), and there was no change in the slow connection. so i tried connecting to the internet using my iphone 6 as a personal hotspot (LTE speed at 15-20mbps). the result was that i was able to connect to the internet and download software updates. why is this happening? with my laptop and iphone, using the linksys router gave me no problems when surfing and downloading at 5mbps. how come that when i use the router with the mac mini, it takes ages for a page to load, whether i use safari or chrome. could anybody please help me? thanks in advance..

sincerely,

ted k

    Might be corrupted network preferences.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.

Restart your Mac. See if that makes a difference.

Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.

If that doesn't help, reset the SMC. Instructions a Mac Mini here  >  Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

thanks carolyn. ill take note of your advice. upon retuning home from work, the internet seems to be working fine now. i just left the mac mini turned on before i left for work, about eight hours that it was left turned on. did the computer configure itself? the speediest revealed a 4.2 - 4.5mbps connection speed. so ill just have a copy of your advice and save it for future use. thank you so much for your time and effort.

That shows that you are connected to a 2.4 GHz network and your Tx Rate is relatively slow at 52. The 2.4 GHz frequency is very congested with a lot of appliances using that frequency

I would get a new router, one that use the new AC band is best but one that handles the 5 GHz N band is OK.

    With AC I get a Tx rate of 527, with 5GHz N I get about 250

thanks IIIaass.. ill bear that in mind. but for now, i am contented with the present setup of my old router. it was just the issue of the slow connection speed when i use the mac mini connecting to the router, which doesn't happen when i use my hp laptop or my iPhone using the same router. ill update this post for any positive/negative developments. thanks again.

Are yo using a wireless mouse or keyboard? Those operate  on 2.4 GHz and can interfer with wifi.

Also, if you have USB devices they can interfere with 2.4 GHz if USB 3

i configured my router in order i can use the 5ghz band. the problem is i cannot connect to it. now, i have two bands to choose from, a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz band. the problem is, i can connect to the 5ghz band, but the connection is not consistent. once i have connected to it, it disappears after a few minutes. so i have to connect to the 2.4ghz once again.

To clarify, the whole network slows down, for all devices, when the Mac is connected, but when you disconnect the Mac, it returns to normal speed?

yes, the whole network slows down from 5mbps to 3.5 mbps. but the connection speed has the greatest impact on the mac mini. its dead slow. right now, i set the 2.4ghz channel to 12 and the 5ghz channel to 44. I'm still observing it for any fluctuations in speed.

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Select All Processes from the View menu, if not already selected, and also select the Network tab.

Click the heading of the Sent Bytes column in the process table to sort the entries by bandwidth usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Repeat with the Rcvd Bytes column.

its google chrome at present because i am watching a live stream video. the setting i made to my router - channel 44 at 5ghz and channel 12 at 2.4ghz - seems to have stabilised the connection. however, I'm still connected at the 2.4ghz band. i still cannot connect to the 5ghz band.

It sounds like you need a better router.
