Q: how to change photos editor

Photoshop Elements 13 says I can change my editor in Photos to an external editor (PE13). However, nowhere on the apple website, or in Photos application does it tell me how to do this. Does anyone know how to switch to an external editor on Photos??

Are you using the new "Photos for Mac" application?  Photos for Mac version 1.0.1 does not support external editors.  The PhotoShop Elements 13 help is probably referring to iPhoto '11.  If you use iPhoto'11 for your photo library you can set up PhotoShop Elements as an external  editor in the Preferences.   Photos is designed to support app extensions instead of external editors, and that will be possible in Photos 2.0 with the next operating system version El Capitan.

In iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1 you would do it this way:

Version 9.6.1 is the only iPhoto version you can use with the current MacOS X version.

Léonie - thanks. Now I get it. So I'll have to use " multi-step" editing for a while......hope you're right about El Capitan!

Have a look at the El Capitan Preview - this is what Apple is promising: http://www.apple.com/osx/elcapitan-preview/

Give your photos a more personal touch with third-party editing tools. And with enhanced organization tools and faster performance, the Photos app gets even better.

New editing extensions let you go further with your photos.

OS X El Capitan supports third-party tools that will be available from the Mac App Store and accessible right in the Photos app. Use multiple editing extensions from your favorite developers on a single photo, or use a mix of extensions and the editing tools built into Photos. From adding subtle filters to using beautiful texture effects, you can take your photo editing to a whole new level.

    Everything in its place.

Photos has been fine-tuned to make it even easier to manage your library. Now you can add a location to a single image or to an entire Moment. Naming your favorite people in Faces is faster with a streamlined workflow. You can also sort your albums — and the contents inside them — by date, title, and more.

The page shows a screenshot of using a third-party editor as an app-extension.

You can already use editing extensions in Mail, for example the Markup tool ur Pixelmator's retouch brush. But Photos did not yet support it.
