Q: Cannot add cards back to apple pay after restoring.

I had all my cards on apple pay until yesterday. But yesterday I thought to restore my phone as new and since after doing that I can't add any cards back to the apple pay. When I enter all the information, It says verifying and then displays a message that says "Card could not be added. Please try again later or contact the card issuer for more information."

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.1.2

I had the same issue after restoring my phone. I was able to add one of credit cards but not the other one. After looking for a solution for a while online, I decided to try to access my card's online account. I was wondering if the bank somehow remembered that I had this card linked to ApplePay and reset this online. Of course I didn't find anything. However after I updated my online personal information (updated the phone number) for my credit card, I decided to try adding the card again. For some reason the problem disappeared ... and I was able to add the card on the first try!

I had to delete icloud since it was sucking up so much mobile data bandwidth when I was traveling internationally recently..of course it wiped all the apple pay cards that were associated with the phone and an apple watch.

I didn't try to add them back when I was abroad, but about two days later total when back in the USA I simply added them again.  AMEX and CHASE VISAS and they all went back on the phone and watch no problem.

I just updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 9.0. I had my VISA and AMEX on Passbook on 8.4. Wallet allowed me to add my VISA with no issue. I could not add my AMEX, "Could not add card: Try again or contact your card issuer for more information." AMEX was no help. Did anyone else find any fixes other than get a new phone or wait for something magically to happen?

I Had the same exact problem and just fixed it!!! my problem came from a restore just like everyone else's. Tried to add cards and got the same error message as you guys. But I just fixed it!   Here is what I did:

    1. Go to settings

    2. Select iCloud

    3. Select your Apple ID (at the top)

    4. Select payment

    5. Tap on the card you have stored there (most likely for iTunes purchases)

    6. Enter your expiration date and security code and click save.

    7. Then go back to the main settings menu and select Passbook and Apple Pay

    8. Select Add credit or debit card

    9. You should then be prompted to enter your security code. Enter that and it should work this time. You can then go through the process of confirming that card and adding other cards.

Let me know if that works for everyone else. Worked for me!

The issue, which was resolved early this year, is clearly back. iOS9 is causing the exact same problem to occur for users. I have tried all recommended advice on this thread and nothing works, either will have to wait for apple to fix the issue in the background or resort to the extreme end of swapping the device out (which seems insane to me). I can also concur that it stopped working precisely when it stopped showing the 'stored' card from my iCloud account in the setup process (i.e having to enter the card manually/via camera as apposed to just putting in the security code for the stored card).

I have noticed a few journalist websites reporting the issue so hopefully it gets flagged up fast.

Update if you have any info or come across a solution.

II've just encountered this problem after signing out of my iCloud account. I'm waiting for an engineer to call me back on Monday. I'm hopeful there'll be some sort of progress as this is a previously resolved issue. I'll update the thread with any info afterwards.

Same here, can't add my Simple card back to Apple Pay after restoring to iOS 9. Haven't been able to add it to any of my devices since.

I've been on with the engineer, he's excluded several possibilities, including it being an issue with my iCloud account. Unfortunately he's still not sure what the cause is. He's continuing to work the issue, I'll update the thread again, once I have new information.

Another call back from the engineer this morning. Basically, they have acknowledged that the issue is on their end and they're working to fix it. No ETA unfortunately but at least they've taken ownership of the problem.

Yes, my message has changed to "Card Device Limit Reached."

But my card is on *NO* devices, and not on iCloud.com to remove there either =(

    Hi,

I have also received the "Could not add card" error after removing my bank card and then trying to add it back to Apple pay - this started after my WatchOS2 upgrade when I found that I could not add my card from iPhone to Apple Watch.

I rang my bank who told me that my card had been removed from Apple pay, they give me the number for Apple Care and I spent an hour on the phone with an iOS engineer who had no idea what was causing it and achieved nothing except resetting the phone to factory defaults.

After running through various options myself I have come to the conclusion that this is a back end problem:

    1. I have downgraded from iOS 9.0 to 8.4.1.
    2. I have upgraded from iOS 8.4.1 to 9.01.
    3. I have tried setting up as new phone and restoring from backup.
    4. I even tried adding my card to my daughters phone.

All of the above resulted in the same, I still could not add my card, I can however add my joint bank card which is for the exact same account type and from the same issuer.

Mine is still displaying the same error message. I tried again after upgrading to iOS 9.01 and that's not helped either. It has to be a backend problem.

Thanks for the updates, getting the same issue. Managed to add one of my cards from the same bank but not the other.

    @Ricmsmith

Please let me know if you hear anything from Apple.  I'm having the same problem here in the UK.  A card (Halifax debit card) that was fine on my iPhone 6 and still is fine on my iPad can't be added to Apple Pay on my new 6s.  I've tried setting up as a new device, which is an incredible pain, and it still didn't work.

I've phoned AppleCare and my bank, and they are pointing the finger at each other.  It's very frustrating.
