Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I called first. I would suggest doing the same as it seems that the call centre people might be more aware of the situation than the various retail stores seem to be.

Are you calling one of the official numbers listed on this page?

Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

I was able to speak to somebody without having to go through any kind of payment process. I see that in some countries free telephonic support is not accessible by mobile phone, maybe try calling from a landline if you haven't done so already?

I didn't see that page, I was just going through the support pages. I will give the 0800 number a call first thing tomorrow.

Thank you so much for that - I will report back tomorrow evening on if I manage to make headway

Apple executive relations called me this week and arranged an appointment with the store manager in Zurich, they offered to replace the screen for 399.00 instead of 699.-chf as a good will gesture. They said until there is an official replacement program they will not replace the screen for free. Executive relations allowed me to submit photos and they came back to me to say the engineer at apple in Ireland states it's not faulty it's just cosmetic. I tried to refer the lady from executive relations to this thread and the BBC sorry but she refused to comment. I'm quite disheartened by the whole experience. I don't see why I should be treated differently from other customers.

This is very unfortunate to hear, it seems that we may have gotten our hopes up too soon.

Apple's handling of the situation is the worst part of the whole affair. They are embarrassing themselves by not dealing with this decisively and they are alienating their loyal customers by not communicating with them in an open manner.

A simple "our engineers are looking into it" would be a lot better than the deafening silence.

Thank God I found this thread. I was going to buy one this weekend. No thanks.

Looks like there is a class action suit getting prepared because of this situation.

    good luck to all affected.

I'm very disappointed by how Apple is handling things lately.

I have to think Apple will do the right thing here.... It's obviously an issue...all be it a small percentage, nevertheles, customers should be taken care of.. I'm sur wit will be a minor cost overal.

FIngers crossed. I will be following closely.

    Another solved case

Had the same issue AR coating was starting to peel off from the top edge. Found this thread and was incredibly useful to ascertain that it is a manufacturing defect rather than anything else.

Called Apple Care discussed the issue with a friendly rep. was asked if I were using any alcohol based cleaning and I said no. Mentioned that there are many users of the late 13 retina’s facing the issue and referenced this thread.  I was transferred to another more senior or a tech lead and same rambling again.

They did not seem to acknowledge the thread but finally advised that as I was out of warranty I can try using the consumer law here in the UK to get this sorted. The chap advised me to make an appointment with the Genius bar at any store and tell them that I want to go with the consumer law to have the screen replaced.

At the store explained the issue and referenced the thread and showed some photos of some of the affected screens… again another senior store lead was called in. The guy did not seem to care much about what I was showing he said that apple has old millions of macbooks and he has not seen any such complaints blah blah blah and he repeatedly mentioned about wrong cleaning methods then I rambled a bit about seeing the thread and reading the 64 pages where you can find users are only using water and microfiber cloth and also mentioned that I also use some expensive camera gear and I am not someone who will use a windolene to clean.

Finally he said they can put this through to get fixed via consumer law and the other chap would complete the rest of the paper work … relieved!!! I asked what happens if the same issue developed in the new replaced screen … he says no it wouldn’t happen in the new screen. I jokingly said that then you agree that there was indeed an issue with the late 2013 screens and he did not seem to like the joke obviously :-).

I was told that it would take 4-5 working days and guess what I handed over on Friday evening and I had a call the next day afternoon to collect it!  was quite impressed. I collected it… a brand new screen and happy. Apple has kind of won me over again.

Suggest checking consumer law in your country/area and getting in touch with Apple. For users with a valid warranty it is a stronger case. Seems like Apple have started to recognize the issue. Thanks bradymott for starting the thread and all who have posted and contributed. I hope to see more and more solved cases.

Have those of you who are getting your screens replaced in the UK? I've been told that getting my screen replaced will literally be a case of getting the right advisor on the phone. I bought my MacBook Pro in the US, so I am not covered by EU consumer laws and my computer is three months out of warrantee, so I can't buy AppleCare either.

I'm really starting to think that if I do get my screen replaced, it will be nothing short of a miracle.

Terrible to see all you guys with this issue, to provide insight regarding macbooks & outdoor use, I've happily been running a 2013 mbr13" outside in direct sunlight pretty much since purchase and barely take any care of it at all (dirty hands, never clean the screen, keyboard etc..) so if outdoor use is the culprit theres clearly a manufacturing defect in the machine.

Hope you guys get free replacements asap!

Hello. I apologize in advance for the correctness of translation.

Apple, apple support. What happened - it is vile to you. I purchased a MacBook two years ago, after a year of use, when the warranty expired, the screen began to appear defects clearly not related to my careful use of the product. Now they are grown, and I'm afraid to assume that after some more time, they will occupy the entire screen, but now enough is no longer possible to work in peace. You released the product from the factory and sold it to me for a fortune, and now I do not even have the right to support? This is a lie. You just lied to me. I and thousands of other users of your products. In Russia there is no place to deal with this problem. In general, you do not respect their customers. I do not want to swear you stole from me enough money scam apple. They stole my nerves and with them the health and emotional balance. Shame on you.
