Jul 14, 2015 7:58 AM in response to sarahgarzonby OGELTHORPE,If your MBP came with installation CD's, this leaves you with essentially two choices.
Contact Apple Customer Service for duplicates. They will need the serial number of your MBP which is on the bottom. There will be a fee.
Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them install an operating OSX. There will be no charge.
Ciao.

Jul 14, 2015 8:20 AM in response to sarahgarzonby Drew Reece,How did you backup? Is the backup bootable? Do the apps work in the backup if you can boot from it?
Connect the backup (assuming it is a fully bootable clone) and then try holding alt (a.k.a. option) at startup to select it.
Keyboard shortcuts need to be pressed early, so don't wait for the startup chime.
If you can get the App store working you can download the installer & try writing it to a USB stick. That will allow you to erase & install again. Do you have access to any other Macs? You can use them to download a OS installer from the store with your Apple ID.

Check what model of Mac you have, some models can use Internet recovery (cmd+alt+r at startup), sometimes it takes a few attempts.
