Q: Why does smart album not find most photos?

A Smart Album which has the single condition

<Face>  < includes>  <[my wife's name]>

finds 339 photos.  In Faces I select [my wife's name] and open the set of exemplars, and 6,906 photos are found.

Why are most photos in which my wife's face is found not found by the Smart Album?

I have seen this and similar Smart Album errors ever since I began using Photos. I have reported them as bugs.  Is there something I am missing, or are Smart Albums this unreliable?

Try the smart rule "Face is ...." and start to type the name of your wife.  Are there multiple suggestions for a completion?  Then you may have defined more than on faces set for your wife.  Use the completion that will give the most results.

Nope, only one name.  In Photos, so far I have not seen the problem you describe, but I am familiar with it.  In iPhoto I had multiple variants for several names.

I have tried several variant of the Rules, such as using <is> or <begins with> in place of <includes>.  No change.

I suspect the error may be related to the large number of Face exemplars.  I think that with smaller numbers the Smart Rules may work correctly.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar issues with Smart Albums.
