Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Huh. It seems to me that the guy who was quipping about stats and numbers earlier in the thread should be more appreciative of an additional data point. Or do you deny that my iMac failed? I am not sure what point you are trying to make.

Just happened to me. iMac wasn't even in use at the time.

A quick Google search clearly shows this has happened to many users so a common design / manufacture problem. A car manufacturer would have to recall all vehicles and replace free of charge. Machine was bought new at the end of march 2014.

I guess a call to Apple is required!

so I hope the repair will be reasonable.

I wonder if there is any way to convince Apple to let me buy AppleCare based on the fact that i bought it for every other purchase i have made in the last 10 years...

No good hoping and wondering. Take the thing in and actually ask!!

Some have had theirs repaired for free whilst out of warranty, instead of sitting around Forums and 'hoping and dreaming'.

    Cheers

Just heard the crack/snap while on a conference call... I am in shock how it just happens all by itself without any interaction with the monitor. Getting ready to back-up and be days without progress on my freelance projects - arrrr!

Same happened to me about an hour ago. I bought mine from John Lewis and have been asked to take the Mac in for them to sort out. Busy backing stuff up to Dropbox in case Time Machine fails.

Update: John Lewis have loaned me a Macbook Pro so that I am not too inconvenienced. That's good customer service!

I'm hoping these threads can be used as proof of how many people have had iMac stand issues in the last 2 years and that Mac reconsiders their design....... even if I understand that we are ALL end users.....

For the record : the stand gave out on it's own last night. I have had the computer 1.5 years so just ran out of coverage. Extended warrantees are for pessimists so I didn't get one...... I guess I'm going to be a "glass half full kind of person" in the future!

Thank you for the graphics of what is holding your screen in place... gave me lots of good ideas.... however I am still bummed that this has happened

While surfing the net 30 mins ago we heard an almighty crack and the screen fell forward. We looked on this forum and was surprised to see so many people with the same issue. This is a quality assurance problem and should be investigated by Apple and the iMacs recalled. We have had the computer for only 18 months.

Propping up screen at the moment with my iPhone box.

Now will book in with Apple to resolve.

This recently happened to my iMac (purchased late 2013).

Took mine to Apple store and will repair for free (I have Apple Care, so I should hope so).

I mentioned to the staff member that it appeared to be a common problem and pointed him to this thread. He was not interested, and stated they were not aware of this problem.

This is the third time I have had to take a Mac in for repair due to construction or faulty hard drives. Apple used to be so reliable.

I know this is a fairly old thread, but still has replies coming in and more and more people having this issue.  If you are out of AppleCare and Apple won't help you, please see my response in another thread here:  iMac 27" monitor just keeled over

DISCLAIMER:  Perform repairs at your own risk.  If you are not sure you can do it, take your expensive iMac to someone who can.

My (out of warranty) 27" iMac was graciously covered by Apple. They warned me up front at the store that if the problem was the back housing, the repair would be in the hundreds of dollars. Fortunately, it was the typical problem with the mechanism and the $40 part and $40 labour were both waived. The service appears to be excellent and the iMac is none the worse for the wear of being completely disassembled. Thank you to the posters in this thread who were actually friendly and supportive.

This has happened to my iMac 27 just yesterday, after having it for over a year and out of AppleCare warranty, and bought here in Dubai, UAE

After googling and finding this discussion thread and reading through the experiences of others, I was hopeful that my situation will be resolved here the same way others have had repairs done free even out of warranty.  So I called up the Apple Support hotline here, and was then transferred to an AppleCare International rep  who kept saying that he is "unaware" of any global action that Apple is taking to repair defective units.  I told him to go to this Apple Discussion board and gave him the link, but he persistently made it a point to deny that this is a common problem with the iMac 27" and refused to have my iMac repaired free and made an "Apple Support Denied" note on my unit's serial number! This I have found out later after calling the local Apple service provider and gave them my unit's serial number.  Is this what Apple is doing now? Denying that this is a common problem and will not repair this FOC and rectify their design flaw?

I have been an avid Apple user for more than 15 years and this is the FIRST TIME I have called in anything for support, and this is what I get.

Now I am left in the doldrums with a "limp" iMac 27

Any suggestions how and where I can take this further? even just to complain about the lack of courtesy and support that International reps are giving to Apple users outside the States? Or will it be pointless as they are now washing their hands of this issue??
