Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

If I have never seen the issue, then how can you predict that it will happen to me or the other millions of unaffected iMacs around the world. It appears that only about 0.0001% of iMacs seem to have been affected. I said it was an issue for a handful of people, or do you have other figures that prove otherwise? Or are you just trolling?

I heard anecdotally that 97.3% of statistics are made up on the spot.

None of us (outside of Apple) really has any idea how frequent it is.  We don't even know the order of magnitude.  It also really doesn't matter, since Apple apparently recognizes the problem and is fixing it for free.  Presumably whatever the actual number of these is, it is common enough that an Apple store clerk knew immediately it was a free repair, whereas she had to check to see if my laptop screen was (it wasn't).

Yes I realise that. I am talking to the other poster who claims to be able to see into the future that all my iMacs in the studio will fall to this issue. Simply asking where he gets this ridiculous idea from.

Not arguing the fact that it is a real issue for some folks, just not a universal one, as they claim.

Just curious, where did you get your statistic that .0001%  iMacs have been affected. Have researched the issue for some time and have seen no published data. Specifically it would be interesting to know what percentage of late 2012/2013 27" machines have been repaired. Seems like the hinge failure has been noted world wide.

I realize forums like this are where people come to complain, but that makes one wonder how many people just used the rubber duck support or simply got their machine fixed and don't bother ever going to a site like this.

Not sure how anybody would know the extent of the problem.

Come back from Genius bar appointment.

I can add a small new info. The technician told me that the new spring they will mount is different from the one broken.

On one hand this means Apple knows. On the other that nothing will happen again.

    At least, I hope so...

I do have the same issue with mine and would like to know if the repair is free to charge and should be done in Apple store or through the reseller I used to buy my imac?

    Hi Arnaud

well....in my case is free of charge since I am in the second year of warranty...but as far as i could understand, they know this is a structural issue...so it would be free of charge, they help you anyway.

About the reseller, as far as i know, if you are in the second year of warranty, you *have to go* to the reseller shop, since Apple store works for you only in the first year, if you buy an Apple product in a reseller store. In the second year, there is no choice: Apple store can do nothing for you but give you some friendly tips.

This is the situation here in In Italy. When i had issues with my macbook air, things worked in this way.

Same happened to me about an hour ago. I bought mine from John Lewis and have been asked to take the Mac in for them to sort out. Busy backing stuff up to Dropbox in case Time Machine fails.

    Hi ,

Thanks for the feedback, I brought my iMac to the FNAC (french reseller) and the guy from the support told me that I have a 3 years warranty (I have negociated it when I purchased my iMac). This warranty implies they keep my iMac and give me "money" in exchange.

This is really not ecologic as they can fix it and implies I need to buy a new one, good news as it will be brand new and more powerfull but more expensive as previous one... And the 3 years warranty is finished (damned warranty conditions...).

Well I will save my data and erase all data in my iMac and it

    A.

Poor me, it just happened to me....it is weird.....

Happy, i know I'm not alone, but I'm kinda worrying if they will fix it for me cuz I'm out of warranty. (i read another post said it charged 600 pounds!!)

BTW, my iMac has been fixed last year due to the display distortion(really serious, whole monitor image was distorted and become green ONLY, yes, like in early 80's green color monitor) Luckily, i got fixed twice eventually get rid of this problem.

Im disappointed with the product quality(hardware), but I'm generally happy with the service and software........

Add me to the list as well. It happened Sunday while i was sitting in front of it, very startling! And very strange considering how long Apple has been manufacturing this general iMac design (back to 2005 i believe). Anyway, I made a huge mistake by (for the first time ever) forgetting to add AppleCare to my top of the line iMac i7 27"... what a horror it was when it dawned on me that i had forgotten... so I hope the repair will be reasonable. I wonder if there is any way to convince Apple to let me buy AppleCare based on the fact that i bought it for every other purchase i have made in the last 10 years... haha a guy can dream.

You will never know until you take it in to be looked at. Posting here will not solve your issue.

    Good Luck

Is this a joke? I am merely adding a data point to hopefully help others. I am under no illusion that posting here will solve my issue. But, uh, thanks?
