Q: DDR3 or DDR3L for iMac 27" Retina mid-2015?

I have not been able to find the answer to this specific question in the specs for this model.

It only states:

Memory

  • 8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory (four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible)
    Configurable to 16GB or 32GB.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Mid 2015) - Technical Specifications

I assume it is DDR3L - can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

Alistair

    Hello alistairjbell,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

If you're looking into upgrading the memory in your iMac Retina 5k, then you will need to make sure that the memory fits the criteria outlined below.

Use Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules (SO-DIMM) that meet all of these criteria:

    • PC3-12800
    • Unbuffered
    • Nonparity
    • 204-pin
    • 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM

    Take care.

    Thanks Alex,

I'd got that information from the tech specs and good that you've confirmed.

What it doesn't say is whether, as long it meets those criteria, it can be 1.35v DDR3L or 1.35v DDR3. This may be the same memory but Crucial and Kingston reference it differently (perhaps).

    Kind regards,

    Alistair
