I wanted to back up my photos before I tried anything, I have a time machine but thought maybe I would back up to a DVD as well. I shared with iDVD and what ever was wrong or not working seemed to be cured.
I Don't know how or what was wrong but it seems to have fixed it. I've shut the whole computer down and bought it back up again and iPhoto is still okay.
glad I didn't have to do a restore or anything like that.

but it wouldn't open and load the photos.
my husband had been looking at them and dragging photos to the desk top he wantwe to print. He didn't know what or if he had done anything to cause it but as above it seems to be sorted now.
