Q: My MacBook (13") hangs up frequently.

I use MacBook (13") of 2008 vintage with Mac OS 10.6.8. H/W Specs: Processor 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, available Disk space 300 GB. Lately, the system has started to hang. The cursor does not move. "Control- alt-esc" key does not work. Only way I am able to get out of the jam is to manually switch off the power and restart it. When I use Activity Monitor, it shows, on an average,  about 1- 1.2 GB memory as used, 500 MB as available memory. Could my problem be related to memory? If so, is there a utility / reliable software for memory clean-up and management which is compatible with Mac OS 10.6.8  Or, if the problem is not related to memory, does anyone have a suggestion to solve the problem?  - Chaitanya

    Howdy chaitanyafromdehradun,

It sounds like your MacBook is totally freezing if the mouse doesn't move and the keyboard doesn't respond.  Have you tried Command-Option-Esc ? (Force quit)   Also can you tell if the time in the upper right menu bar is incrementing?  Showing seconds helps with that.

With such a hard freeze I would start with this article

Note it links to a software troubleshooting article which is good too.

Many thanks Nubz for your advice. However, I should share with you a happy development on this issue: Just on a hunch, I explored the Disk Utility. Verify Disk did not show any error. I then clicked on Verify Disk Permission which flagged a long list like,

    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Classes/dt.jar", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are lrw-r--r-- ."…...

I then clicked on "Repair Permissions" which apparently reset some ( but not all) of the permissions. I carried out this operation two days ago and in the meantime, the system has not hanged. However, I will stay alert to watching the system behavior as described  in the article you have provided and I am keeping my finger crossed. Thank you, once again and best wishes. - Chaitanya
