Q: Won't boot after Boot Camp drivers are installed.

Background:

I have a late-2012 i7 27" iMac with a 3 TB Fusion drive and 32GB DRAM running OS X 10.10.4.  I have been successfully running windows in Boot Camp on this iMac for a couple of years.  As it happens, my model had the bad 3TB Fusion drive and about the time Apple announced the replacement program the hard drive began to fail (good timing :-)

After getting all of my Mac software running successfully on the replacement drive I decided to install Windows 7 64 bit again.  I used the Boot Camp Assistant to create the Windows partition and to install the drivers (BootCamp5.1.5621) on a USB drive.

The Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit install proceeded without problems all the way to the point where the Boot Camp drivers app rebooted Windows.  Upon the reboot the startup failed.  I first tried "Starting Normally" but was taken back to the same point so I said to repair.  The repair process found no problems and offered to do a system restore.  I told it to do so. The boot proceeded without problems, but of course I had no Apple drivers so no internet, etc.  I then downloaded the drivers directly from Apple and installed.  Same problem.

My question...It has been so long since I first installed Windows on my iMac that I have no idea what version of the drivers I used.  Would moving to version 4 of the drivers possibly work or is there something really amiss in that version?

Sending from my iPad mini as the window install still proceeding.

I made one change to the process and perhaps that's what allowed the boot to continue from the USB drive this time. Using disk utility I changed the Cruzer partition to GUID and then back to MBR thinking that perhaps there was something messed up in the  partitioning of the cruzer prior to my install.

The Boot Camp drivers are now being installed—hopefully it'll complete properly this time I'll get back as soon as I can.

    ...

The news is not good I'm afraid. The install proceeded normally all the way up through the reboot after the Boot Camp drivers are installed.

During that reboot the first thing I saw was that black screen with white text going through the bios. Then  a white screen and the Mac boot up tones but they were distorted—rather tinny and low volume. Then  another white screen and that's where I am right now.  I've been sitting here for five minutes of white screen. Something isn't right somewhere.

It's now been 10 minutes of this white screen. I suspect it's time to bail and manually power cycle the system for rebooting.

Back at the same point. Black window white text. Windows error recovery. Windows failed to start. Blah blah blah. Launch start up repair (recommended) or start Windows normally are the only only two options. This is back to the exact same point I was when I first posted this thread.

I chose the repair option and then looking at the diagnosis and repair details it says root cause: A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting.

It appears as I first suspected that the BCA driver install is causing the problem.

Closing the repair process and not doing a system restore has taken me back to the same loop as before.

    1. Do you get a chance to create a Windows account and set password?

    2. Can you post the output of the following terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Is any external storage (disk3 or disk4) other than the USB installer connected during the Windows Installation?

Yes.  My two thunderbolt drives, one an auxiliary drive and one for Time Machine.  Time Machine was disabled for the install.

I also attempted to boot into safe mode with logging.  The reboot failed and rebooted automatically into OS X, but the BootCamp drive does contain the nbtlog.txt file.

I can disconnect all peripherials except the USB drive and keyboard and try again if you think that is the source of the problem.

TB drives are the worst when it comes to external storage during Windows installation. Please disconnect all external peripherals. Remove Windows via BCA, reset SMC and NVRAM, and start with BCA again.

Please verify that the external TB drives are working and do not have any corruption on another Mac, if possible.

One step closer but not there yet.  The install completed and the reboot after BCA drivers were installed completed to the login screen.  It appears I have no keyboard!  It is a direct connect USB.

    The Bluetooth mouse does work.

Do you have access to a Bluetooth Keyboard or another USB2 Keyboard? The fancier the wired keyboard, the less likely it is to work. Stay on this screen and try and find another keyboard.

Unplug the keyboard on this screen, wait a few seconds (perhaps 15) and then plug it back in again, and test. If that does not work, please try all the available USB ports on the iMac. Are there any USB hubs connected to the iMac? If yes, remove them.

Right now I'm using the on screen keyboard. I've read on the Internet that a lot of people have this problem with this model computer. Apparently one of the Intel drivers causes a problem. So I'm using the on-screen keyboard to operate the system while I'm installing all of the updates and then I'll reboot and if that doesn't work then I'll try your idea.

That same article contains directions on how to remove the offending Intel USB3 driver and then how to install the proper drivers.

I have it working now. I installed 193 windows updates and three Apple updates but the keyboard still didn't work.  I also tried your idea of unplugging the keyboard.  That didn't work, either.

Further searching brought up a thread from late 2012 that held the solution--for me, at least.

    Note #8 from this thread:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/installed-windows-7-bootcamp-drivers-now-key board-doesnt-work.1509773/

worked.  The text from that note is shown below:

    ===

The issue is the USB 3.0 extreme driver that gets installed.

To fix this boot into windows safe mode by holding or repeatedly hitting F8 as windows boots. Once in safe mode go to the control panel/ add remove programs and uninstall the USB 3.0 driver listing. After that you can reboot back into regular windows and your keyboard/mouse will work and you will have 1 unknown device listed in device manager.

Apparently this is related to a usb3 monitor utility that gets installed with the normal intel setup package. To get the drivers installed without that utility i downloaded the usb driver package from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21129

Extract the files but do not run the setup. Instead go to device manager and update the driver and point it to the folder you extracted.

After you install the first unknown device a second one will pop up. Do the exact same thing with that device. Both items will install successfully and everything should be fine.

I haven't tested a usb3 device yet but everything should be in a position for it to work.
