Q: iCloud Photo Library question

When I set this up, which option is recommended - Download Originals or Optimize My Mac?

When done, I should be able to see photos on my iPad and iPhone if I turn iCloud Photo on that device, correct? My wife has an iPad with an Apple account. How would we set her up to view the iCloud Photo Library on it?

Thanks,

Don

When I set this up, which option is recommended - Download Originals or Optimize My Mac?

It depends on how much space you have on your hard drive?  If you have plenty then the originals would be more expedient since you wouldn't have to first download the original of any photo you'd like to edit.

When done, I should be able to see photos on my iPad and iPhone if I turn iCloud Photo on that device, correct?

Yes.  However, you might want to set those to optimize unless you have plenty of space on them.

You'll also have to purchase additional iCloud storage depending on the size of your library: iCloud storage pricing - Apple Support

My wife has an iPad with an Apple account. How would we set her up to view the iCloud Photo Library on it?

She would only be able to view Shared Photo Albums created by you on the Mac, iPad or iPhone.  To be able to view the entire library she wouild have to log into your iCloud account.  Then she would not be able to get her emails, texts, etc., only share you're email and text accounts.

However, the shared albums could be set up so she could also add to them if so desired.

Then there's Family Sharing.  The following is from that Apple document:

The whole family can contribute to the family photo album.

Now collecting and sharing family memories is easier and more fun. When Family Sharing is turned on, a shared album is set up automatically in the Photos app on all family members’ devices. Then everyone can add photos, videos, and comments to the album and be notified when something new is added. You can add or view photos and videos from iPhoto on your Mac, and from Photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 7 or later.

More about Family Sharing can be found HERE.  How to setup Family Sharing can be found HERE.

I've not used Family Sharing so that's about all I know about it.

    Thanks,

You cannot use  a NAS drive with Photos.  The library must be a drive formatted OS X Extended (journaled( with ownership set to be ignored and connected, if an external drive,  directly to the Mac via a USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt cable.  Can't be wireless.

IS there a way to set up an external drive, formatted for Mac that I can access photos front on my other devices? What about using an external cloud drive. Would that allow my devices to access?

    thanks,

    Don

For mobile devices, no.  You can upload you photos to a online photo site like SmartMug and access them via your other devices that way.

iCloud Photo Library shows downloading 9 items, but the verbiage in that library state "iCloud Photo Library will be removed in 15 days. Photos and videos are no longer uploading. you may cancel this deletion from iCloud System Preferences.

this has been downloading for weeks. it shows downloading 9 items but verbiage under  that states no longer uploading.

what is happening and what are my next steps?

    Thanks,

    Don
