Mac OS XI NEVER have this problem. My phone always rings, whether locked or not. My guess is that you have Do Not Disturb turned on. When it is on the phone will not ring when locked. That's what "Do not disturb" means. Don't disturb me with rings or other noises.
Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Jun 4, 2015 10:01 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby jimfromblack hawk,Honestly, I really don't understand the whole thing. When it wasn't ringing, the DND was set to manual and lock was set to 1 minute. I assume manual is is off? or do I need to set it to automatic?
Funny thing is, it used to ring just fine. Never lock seemed to fix it for me, and I assume there are no adverse effects to turning the automatic lock off?

If eeither "Manual" nor "Schedule" are enabled , DND is turned on, not off. If you have either one of those enabled, DND will be on at some time. If you have it set to Manual. DND will be on until you turn it off. Scheduled means DND will be turned on according to the schedule you set.
If you want DND turned off, make sure that BOTH Manual and Scheduled are turned off.

Mac OS XUnlock the phone. Look in the status bar. Do you see a crescent moon? If you do go to Settings/Do Not Disturb, turn off Manual and turn off Automatic. Lock the phone. It will ring on incoming calls. If it doesn't either your iOS image is seriously damaged or your phone has a hardware problem. You can try restoring iOS, or take it to an Apple store for diagnosis.
Never lock is fine, unless your phone is stolen while it is unlocked. Then you will have very serious consequences to deal with. But it's a workaround for something that should not be happening. Fix the underlying problem.

Thanks for the response

Jun 4, 2015 3:20 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby jimfromblack hawk,Since I don't use a passcode anyway, it probably doesn't matter. I use the phone for my business and entering a passcode frequently would be a big inconvenience. I also don't have any financial accounts setup in the phone anyway.
Thanks for the response.

No, in this case, Manual is the opposite of Scheduled.

Mac OS XWhat about business emails that you might not want someone else to see? Or your list of contacts?

Jun 18, 2015 6:11 PM in response to COJayhawkby MacUser7726,You just said what everyone struggling with this issue thinks when they read some of these responses.
I'd like someone who still has this issue to try this.
Settings -> Do Not Disturb -> Allow Calls From:
Set this to "Everyone"
Also turn "Repeated Calls" on.
Just got my wife's Iphone 6 ringing and playing notifications when locked.
I agree with the post that locking puts the phone into DND. Maybe by design, maybe a glitch..idk.
Going back to my Android phone now.... it's more fun, more intuitive, and easier to use.

I have the same problem, I constantly miss calls, this just started recently. One forum suggested turning off the automatic locking of the phone, this seems to be working. Fortunately, I have no need to lock the phone and don't use a passcode anyway!
Apple dropped the ball on this one, the phone should ALWAYS ring by default!
My wife as a ZTE phone and we intentionally setup a Do Not Disturb schedule to avoid random 1:00 AM wrong numbers.
By default, the phone DOES always ring. If your phone does not ring when it is locked, then either you have the mute switch engaged, Do Not Disturb enabled or there is something wrong with your phone. I have a passcode enabled on my phone and it auto locks after one minute. It rings just fine in that state.

Jun 18, 2015 7:56 PM in response to Meg St._Clairby jimfromblack hawk,You post helped me to resolve the issue, I have DND disabled and it works fine even with lock the phone enabled. Thanks.
PS. Disabling the lock feature seemed to increase battery consumption.
Regardless all is well. They should re-word the DND feature .... It certainly confused me.

Yes, disabling the screen lock will decrease the battery life a gread deal.

Jul 20, 2015 5:11 PM in response to Meg St._Clairby courtneyhand224,Same issue here. Has there been a fix? I am on Verizon and just got the phone from a warranty replacement last week. My last one was fine until it took a bad swim in a faulty lifeproof case. Same circumstances as listed above.
-
Jul 20, 2015 5:15 PM in response to courtneyhand224by Lawrence Finch,The "fix" is to understand how Do Not Disturb works. If the phone does not ring when locked this means that you have Do Not Disturb enabled.

Jul 20, 2015 5:24 PM in response to Johnonline55by courtneyhand224,Wow! You are impressively unhelpful. I have already mentioned that my phone falls under the same circumstances as listed above in the other 50+ comments. DND is not on, the switch is not flipped and as much as I understand the concept of user error occurring more often than not this is clearly a widespread problem with the phones and not the many people on this thread experiencing the same problem.
