Jul 20, 2015 11:50 PM in response to dgfromcpkby miguel_forum,what is intersting to see is that in general nobody defends the Photos App as a good App, or as a good idea from Apple. everybody in this discussion don't like this wonderful new App from Apple.
what is clear, this is business, Apple fired 2 big teams iPhoto and Aperture, just to extend the iOA Photos team to give a chance for us to mess with our photos in our computers
I am back to iPhoto, took me several hours to put my library back, and I am happy for now. this opens a door for many others to come up with new ideas of Apps to fill up a new hole left from Apple.
some years ago, they did similar move with iMovie. I was and I am not a movies guy and i use this kind of App not so much, but the new iMovie I am not able to work with it also, and meanwhile I bought from the market, 3 Apps that does what I need and I am pretty happy without using iMovie. It is for sure what will happen with the Photos App, it is a bye bye to the photos management from Apple.

It's not about defending the app, it's actually about trying to help people with technical issues. The people who are happy with the app don't post here. Actually, if you look at it, it's quite a good app for a first version. There are two areas where the app is much stronger than iPhoto: The whole iCloud Library, working across devices on OS X and iOS is very strong. The editing tools are very strong - much enhanced on iPhoto. If you look at the discussions you'll see most complaints are down to inability to batch change things, work with external editors and less sorting options. all of these are promised for the next version. Other than that there are a lot of people who dislike the change from Events to Moments. Well go back a few years and check out the iPhoto forums for the period where Rolls changed to Events - the same sort of complaints and arguments.
Photos is a free app that works right across the Apple ecosystem. It has very good processing tools. It's a good app, not perfect, but then it's v1, so there's a way to go. iphoto had 13 years of development to get to where it was.
For me, I too use a 3rd party app, but that's the app that meets my needs. Doesn't make Photos a bad app, just one aimed at a different user from me.

Jul 21, 2015 6:43 AM in response to Johannes Zanderby Jim144,I think doing away with Events was a giant step forward. One less thing to have to muck around with. Photos does the work of organizing by Moments, Collections, and Years. If I want to group a particular set of photos I can create an album.

Jul 21, 2015 7:09 AM in response to DenverMartiniby Jim144,To quickly put your photos into a new album called April 2015:
1. In the search field type april 2015 then press Enter.
2. Press Command + A to select found photos.
3. Press Command + N to create a new album. You can change or refine the name at this point. Then click OK.
4. To get back to viewing all your photos click Cancel.
If you have already created your April 2015 album and want to drag photos:
1. Click View > Show Sidebar.
2. Select Photos at the top of the sidebar. Don't select the All Photos album as that is a Smart Album and photos cannot be dragged from here to another album.
3. Perform steps 1 and 2 above.
4. Drag your selected photos to your April 2015 album.

Jul 21, 2015 8:02 PM in response to dgfromcpkby miguel_forum,Rob publish a very good help, he gave several Apps options, mostly free ones which deserves a shot. i personally like the m y l i o , this one has a iOS App also and does the basic, people, places, albums and folders. what is very interesting to see is that they keep a very easy folder structure, basic one and so easy to manage. I will be around the next weeks giving a try on this one.

Jul 31, 2015 10:11 AM in response to dgfromcpkby MarkThai,I hate Photos app too. Now I am unorganized. I used to organize my Events in iPhoto once a week. Put Events together, separate Events according to my preferences. My method used to work perfect to me. I know exactly where to find certain photos from let say 10 years ago. Now I can't do that easily anymore. I have to create albums, and then I might forget to place some photos to some albums or duplicate photos to 2-3 albums unintentionally. With iPhoto, new photos are shown in an event with a date, so I know I should put them somewhere later. I don't like Photos organizing my photos by date or by places. I want to organize it my way, i.e. by activities. And I don't want to do that in albums. I want them in events, so I know for sure they are not duplicated and not floating around without proper events. Another big thing I missed is all of my photos over the world map with pins. I love when I can see my pins along the route from some of my trips by just zooming to a certain area. I can see how I walked around blocks in Manhattan. Then zoom out and zoom in to maybe San Francisco, and see my route to Sacramento. Now I have to go to "Moments", double click on the Moment's name, then it shows photos on an area in a small map. And when zooming out, no other photos show up because I have to then go to other Moments or again create albums.
Basically, Photos took away a lot of good stuff from iPhoto. And add a few useful things that is good for Apple to make more money from album printing. It is now look exactly as it is on iPhone which I hate that too.
By the way, I just realized that iPhoto app is still there in Applications folder, but it stopped there after Photos took over in around April. So I will make it my main photos app again. And when Apple make Photos worth using, then I might switch.

No need to RANT - just stop using it and use software you like - it is insane to choose to use something you hate and then complain about your personal choice to use it

Jul 31, 2015 10:49 AM in response to MarkThaiby Terence Devlin,As Larry says, if you don't like the app then it's really simple: don't use it. It's not compulsory, you're free to use any app you want.
If you want to find photos not in an Album, then use a simple Smart Album:
File -> New Smart Album
Album -> is not -> Any
That should help with you forgetting to put photos into album.
There are no duplicates in Albums. A photo can be in any number of Albums with no duplication whatever.
Photos took nothing away from iPhoto. Everything in iPhoto is still there and unchanged.

Aug 8, 2015 6:20 PM in response to dgfromcpkby pegrose068,My work requires me to view thousand of images. I have years of rating selects with the old iphoto 1-5 star system. This is ALOT of work which is now wiped out. Rating 1-5 helps with the elimination process of client selects, for this reason alone the so called "upgrade" is a downgrade for me. I just noticed I can view/sort by date only? no ascending or descending. WOW who thinks of this?

Aug 8, 2015 10:35 PM in response to dgfromcpkby miguel_forum,finally yesterday night I was able to finish the "UNDO" from Photos back to iPhoto. as well none there is no way back unless you have the patience to loose in my case in total more than 48 hours of work and do it all manually. export all the photos, each event to your hard drive and then import them to iPhotos. what is more painful is that all your classifications were already lost in the first step when we upgrade to Photos, and i had to re do it all again in iPhotos.
nice to see about that GREAT Photos App on the end of the day gave me a clear picture of the state of the art, more than words, the pictures talks by themselves:
if i delete all the photos from the Photos App, why i still have the location of some of the places shown on the screen? is it a bug of the Photos or a bug on my TV?
for more:
after deleting all the photos and remove them from the trash box "Show Recently Delete" what a bu....ht name to "empty the trash", surprise, surprise, the Photos file still have 6,33GB of empty photos!
After these FACTS, i understood why everytime i deleted photos and re-deleted on the "Show Recently Deleted", they keep coming back to the Photos next time you open the software! that is all the time happening. and no, no it is nothing related with the iCloud, all that options are off on my computer and iPhone.
The Photo library file was something around 62GB initially on the end after empty it from all the photos i go still 6GB left on the disk.
the only advice i can give is keep your clicks thousand miles away from Photos. if you need a photo library management software use iPhoto, unfortunate will be no progress in this software, but it will be working until Apple changes is OS X structure due to hardware architecture. the iWeb and iDVD are still full functional after some years of being left behind by Apple.
If you are attempt to upgrade to actual or future Photos, do yourself a favour and backup your library first before you do a mistake and the way back is painful .

W R O N G ! ! !
If you do not ALWAYS have a current backup then you do not care about your data - anyone with photos or data that has any value to them will always have a good current backup - at a min an hourly TimeMachine Backup and generally a second and maybe even third backup - it is a known fact that things go wrong and unless you have a backup when they do you lose things
And as to the rest of your lengthy post - not even clear what you are getting at - going back to iPhoto is as simple as launching it in your applications folder and using it - no complicated hoops to jump through or backups to restore or any other messy things - just launch iPhoto and use it
and your advice is crazy
the only advice i can give is keep your clicks thousand miles away from Photos.
Photos works great and millions of people love it - if you do not then simply do not use it but telling other to follow you flawed advice is not a good idea - each person has different needs and each person needs to make up their own mind - for Most Photos is the answer - for a few iphoto is and foe even fewer some other program is the answer
Just because you do not understand it is not reason to discourage others from using a program that is highly likely to be perfect for them
