Q: iPhoto version gone

Some how I lost my current iPhoto.  When I open it there are pictures from a different version. I don't even know how to explain it.  How do I recover the version and photos I've been using for 12 years. All my photos are gone. I looked in Time Machine and it only opens the same version.  Help

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Well if you can't explain it it's more difficult for us to help

Did you by any chance install the Yosemite OS and the new Photos.app?

Some how I lost my current iPhoto.

Tell us what changed, since iPhoto last worked for you. Did you upgrade to Yosemite, as terence Devlin suggested?

If you are seeing different pictures than previously, you have probably opened a different iPhoto library.

Where do you store your iPhoto Library? Is it in your Pictures folder? Do you keep it on an external drive?  Did you move your iPhoto Library to a different location?

    As a start tell us:

    • Which version of iPhoto you are currently using.  You can see that in the "About" panel, when iPhoto is running.  From the iPhoto menu > About iPhoto".
    • And which iPhoto libraries you have, and where they are.  You can see your libraries, when you hold down the options key while launching iPhoto. This will bring up the library chooser panel. As you select the libraries in this panel, you can see the location of the library in the path bar at the bottom of the panel.

You're welcome Diana.  Good luck with exploring your Mac.

As I muttle through cleaning up my computer and learning to use it more and more I will be back to this community.

The first thing I'd try to learn is how to set up Time Machine to keep regular backup, if you are not using it already.   That will save you from worrisome moments when files are missing.

Thank you.  I do have TM and did look at it, but I didn't see the iPhoto version I lost, it kept showing me a much older version (7 or older).  I am going to take your suggestion and read Mac Basic-Time Machine so I'll be more familiar with how it works.

Maybe you can help me with another iPhoto issue.  There are about 10 albums that when opened have the little squares where photos should be but are not.  Any ideas?

Great Leonie, thanks!!  Now, what do I do with the iPhoto Library copy that I made after I run all the fixes?  I don't really want to leave it in the back up taking up space right?

Also, where do I grab iPhoto from to drag it into the back up disk?

By the way, I am taking notes from all your advice so I will have it all when I go to actually do all this.

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and helping me.

When iPhoto is working again and the thumbnails are showing again, you can delete the additional backup copy.

Also, where do I grab iPhoto from to drag it into the back up disk?

Your iPhoto Library should be in your Pictures folder. Grab it from there and drag it to a folder on your backup drive:

Thank you. So far that's all the questions I can think of.  I will be attempting the fix in the next week or so when I can set time aside from everything else!  It's scary to me so I want to be able to devote the time needed to do it all correctly.

    Thank you!

Oh no, one last question.  The pictures folder that is usually on that left sidebar under Applications (on your photo above) has disappeared from that location.  How do I get it back there?

Diana, click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward. Then go to the menu bar on top of your screen to the "Finder" menu and open the Finder Preferences.

In the Finder Preferences click the "Sidebar" tab and enable all items you want to see in the Sidebar.

You may want to have a look at David Pogues "Missing Manual" books.  They are easy to read and help to understand how the Mac is working.  I learned a lot from them when I started with my first Mac:  See this link: http://davidpogue.com/books/

The newest versions are for Yosemite.
